Cleveland Browns contoversial wide receiver Braylon Edwards’ wildest dreams have come true. He is playing in New York, the city that never sleeps.
ESPN has reported, as chronicled just a bit ago by Jerod, that early this morning Cleveland Browns head coach Eric Mangini has traded Edwards to his old team, the Jets, just two days after Edwards was accused by a friend of LeBron James of cold-cocking him, resulting in a black eye and other bruises.
Although the victim, Edward Givens, did not formally file charges as of yet, he has until Friday to do so, according to Cleveland police. As it turns out, the police report identifies Givens’ assailant as “an unidentified man.”
Givens, though, contacted the Associated Press and other media outlets to squeal that Edwards was that man. Apparently, Edwards was at Prospect Street nightclub, the View, at 2:30 am Monday with other unnamed Browns letting off some steam following the Browns fourth straight loss on Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals, 23-20 in overtime at Cleveland Browns Stadium.
LeBron James even got into the act. When questioned by reporters, James said Edwards was a bit envious “childish.”
Edwards was said to be in Mangini’s office at the Browns Berea practice field on Tuesday. Mangini told the press he would investigate the incident.
The Browns were said to have almost pulled the trigger to trade for Edwards before the start of the 2009-10 season, but for whatever reasons, a trade never came down.
There is no doubt that Edwards has been blessed with talent — especially in 2007 when Browns quarterback Derek Anderson and Edwards connected. The Browns in 2007 recorded a 10-6 season, the best since the team “came back” in 1999.
Edwards has seen his share of the headlines. In 2008 preseason, Edwards was racing across the field barefoot and was spiked in the foot by Donte Stallworth. Edwards was drinking and partying with Stallworth in Miami last year before Stallworth got into his car and committed vehicular homicide, in the death of Mario Reyes who was walking to a bus stop.
During the police investigation of the case, Edwards stated he didn’t think Stallworth was drunk — or he could have crashed in Edwards’ Miami hotel room.
In his rookie season, Edwards hired a helicopter so he could fly from Cleveland to Columbus to see an Ohio State-Michigan game at the Shoe.
Braylon Edwards is a gifted player who wants to be a celebrity on center stage more than just an NFL football player.
Good luck Braylon and remember not to take a handgun into a New York nightclub.
You could hurt yourself — or someone else.
