Fantasy Football: Midseason Disappointments and Surprises

We have now reached the NFL mid-season, and it is time for Pro Football Insight to issue their Fantasy Mid-Season Awards.

The 2009 season has definitely had its share of disappointments and surprises, so without further delay, onto the PFI awards.

PFI Biggest Disappointment Team

QB-Trent Edwards-Bills This award could have went to several QB’s, but Edwards was a run away winner for me. Edwards was always middle of the pack as far as being a fantasy QB, but with the off-season acquisition of Terrell Owens, along with an array of other proven wide receivers and running backs, Edwards’ stock soared in the off-season. Edwards, however, has played his worst football since taking the starting job from J.P. Losman his rookie year.

Are the Celtics the Best Team in the NBA?

Email Post Email Post

Boston is off to a great start.

Not that it wasn’t expected, but who knew that the Celts would hold the Charlotte Bobcats to a total of 59 points in the C’s home opener. This came right after the Celtics spoiled the Cavaliers season and home opener as well. Then last night the Celtics took down the young Bulls squad 118-90, barely breaking a sweat.

It’s scary how well this C’s team is doing.

People have been talking about how LA has brought in Ron Artest, and how Cleveland should be fueled up on enough Diesel power to win a ring this year, but most people do not talk as much about this Celtics team, whose main acquisition was Rasheed Wallace. Without a doubt, this wasn’t as big as a Shaq or Vince Carter deal.

Even though I say this,  I have one question.

Are the Celtics the best team in the NBA?

College and NFL picks for October 31st and November 1st

Email Post Email Post

We are 5-1 in the Pros the last two weeks and we will keep the streak going after this week.

We also picked up some ground in the college game (thank God).

Overall on the season with the Pro Picks we are 16-9, which is a whopping 64% accuracy. There are websites out there that charge and don’t even hit that kind of mark. College…not so hot…11-14 on the year so far.

Onto this week’s picks:

Knee Deep in the Hoopla with Jefferson Starship

Heard this song for the first time in a while today.

Surprisingly, it is much harder to do on Sing Star than you might think. And yes, I have spent many a drunken, cold Indiana night learning that lesson that hard and embarrasing way but doing better than you might assume. (For the record, I dominate “Chasing Cars” by Snow Patrol. Not that you care.)

Anyway, since I’m swamped at work and don’t want to give you nothing the rest of the afternoon, here you go.

Bears Have Chance to Fix Problems This Sunday

Email Post Email Post

Last Sunday for the Bears was nowhere near fun.

It wasn’t fun for the players, coaches, or the fans, and I was disgusted by the Bears just plain awful playing. Their weaknesses were heavily exposed by the Bengals in a game game that showed something needs to be fixed and fast.

Proofreading Fail or Subliminal Evidence of Further Sexual Deviance at ESPN?

mort-tweet

Obviously just a proofreading error. But a funny one.

Chris Mortenson might want to make sure he proofreads his tweets before sending them out, especially if he’s using a word for which one missed letter could completely change the meaning and context of his sentence.

You see, when you work for ESPN, and “hoing” is the misspelled word in question, the irony there is just too delicious not to gobble up.

Here is the tweet in question, screenshot after the jump. [Read more...]

For Blackhawks, Lack of Offense Leads to 0-2 Loss to Preds

Email Post Email Post

Huet played yet another fantastic game, but the offense for the Chicago Blackhawks couldn’t produce anything Thursday night.

It was the first time the Hawks’ offense looked off key. The Hawks powerplay woes continue as they went 0-5 last night. The Hawks were unable to get anything setup during those powerplays, especially on a Nashville interference penalty  late in the 3rd period.

The lack of offense and not capitalizing on the powerplays lead to the Preds handing the Hawks their 4th loss of the season.

NFL Week 8 Injury Updates: The Johnson WRs, Wayne, Westbrook & More

calvin-andre

It’s Friday morning, so let’s do our typical roundup of the most important injuries on the fantasy football landscape, going game-by-game down the Week 8 schedule.

There are some big names on the injury report this week, especially at the WR position where Calvin Johnson, Andre Johnson, Reggie Wayne, Percy Harvin, Bernard Berrian, Anquan Boldin, and Jerricho Cotchery all are batting maladies.

Denver-Baltimore

Nothing pertinent here. Joe Flacco showed up on the injury report with an ankle, but he’s fine.

Vikings at Packers in Lambeau: Preview, Odds, and Pick

Email Post Email Post

The NFL betting odds for this week’s matchup between NFC North rivals Minnesota and Green Bay has the Packers as a favorite at home, and all eyes will be on Brett Favre, who is making his return to Lambeau Field, but this time as a Viking, which may bring some boos (and more) from Packer fans.

Friday Morning Would…You Rather Have Your Teams’ Best Player Date Minka Kelly or Kate Hudson?

Email Post Email Post
minka-kate

The 2009 World Series embodies everything that a Midwest baseball fan hates.

1) No representation from either of the Central Divisions. That’s right, no White Sox, Cubs, Cardinals, Tigers, Twins, Brewers, Astros, Indians, etc. In fact, none of these teams even really came close.

2) Two straight weeks of complete immersion in the East Coast bias/obsession that can become so annoying and grating during the regular season.

3) A battle of two teams with enormous payrolls who, on a yearly basis, pluck the best players off of teams in smaller markets who cannot afford them. (And yes, I know the Cubs, and to a certain extent the White Sox, have a high payroll…but Chicago gets Milton Bradley and Alex Rios, New York and Philly get C.C. and Cliff Lee.)

With all of that being said, I’ve decided that we have done enough actual analysis of this year’s World Series. AJ wrote a great preview piece earlier this week, and that will have to suffice.

In place of the article that I was going to write about the 2009 World Series (currently tied at 1-1 if you live in The Shire and don’t get Fox or have an Internet connection) before I thought more about it and just got pissed off, I decided that we could all benefit from a couple of gratuitous photo galleries of two of the most attractive WAGs on either team.

So while there are many legit questions out there as the series heads to Philly (What’s up with ARod and Ryan Howard? Does either manager have faith in its bullpen?), we are going to tackle one that is perhaps a little less exigent as part of our usual Friday Morning Would series.

Would you rather have your favorite baseball hero date Minka Kelly or Kate Hudson?

When It Comes to Sports, Cleveland Most Certainly Does Not Rock

Email Post Email Post
browns-fan

I want you to play the song below while reading this post. Try, as best you can, to not be distracted by the vicious, piercing irony of the chorus as it relates to the sports teams of Cleveland.

I know, it’s not going to be easy…especially after the events of last night rubbed even more salt into the (eternally?) tragically open wounds of an entire city’s fan base.

On the same that night that the last two Cy Young Award winners — both of whom were Indians when they won it — faced off in Game 1 of the 2009 World Series, the Cleveland Cavaliers and LeBron James dropped to 0-2.

You might think, well hey, at least Cleveland fans have the Browns game to look forward to this Sunday!

And this sentiment, of course, would be met either with hearty laughter or plaintive cries, all depending on one’s perspective, mood, and current level of sanity.

No, ladies and gentleman, sports in the city of Cleveland most certainly do not rock. Last night was simply further confirmation of this ever deepening and depressing truism.

But don’t take it from me. Scan the Cleveland sports blogosphere. It’s hard to wait for next year when you can barely make it from day to day this year.

Intriguing Morning Read: Excerpts From Tim Donaghy’s Book Blowing the Whistle

Email Post Email Post
tim-donaghy-book-excerpts

Spent a little time this morning reading the excerpts from Tom Donaghy’s book Blowing the Whistle that currently is without a publisher.

It is important to remember while reading the excerpts — which cannot be described as anything other than explosive and damning, but not totally unexpected — that Donaghy is a convicted felon who seemingly spent a good portion of his career engaged in deceitful, unethical professional acts.

Thus, weigh how much validity his word carries.

It is also important to remember, however, that the NBA has been dogged by claims of rigged games and less-then-objective officiating for years. In fact, I’m sure my friends down here in Dallas will have a thing or two to say about Donaghy’s book as they recall Dwyane Wade’s star-making appearance against the Mavs in the NBA Finals…which was, of course, marred by controversial officiating.

Either way, the excerpts are intriguing enough to pass along, in addition to a terrific music video retrospective on one of the most controversial NBA games ever, and the subject of one of the excerpts: the 2002 Western Conference Finals between the LA Lakers and Sacramento Kings.

More Scenes From the Muni Lot: The Official Frownie Foto Gallery

Since I officially entered the blogosphere some 14 months ago, one of my favorite Cleveland sports blogs and near-daily stops has been Cleveland Frowns.

It’s a place where, like the song says, “everybody knows your name” and where unique, informed, and interesting takes on all things Cleveland sports are usually present.

And then there are the Frownie Foto galleries, which are…well…let’s just say they’re the best thing since this.

This past weekend I had the good fortune of meeting Frowns and joining him for an entertaining tailgate in the world famous Muni Lot before the Browns-Packers game, which has previously been remembered here and here.

Now this glorious Sunday has its own Frownie Foto gallery…and it’s awesome.
