Jamal Lewis Makes Final Cut and Remains A Cleveland Brown

Jamal Lewis still a Brown, makes 53-man rosterAfter reports came out of Cleveland that the Browns might cut Jamal Lewis, he remains a Brown after the team trimmed down to the 53-man roster.

I can’t figure out the motive behind the thought of cutting Lewis.  Eric Mangini’s plan to establish any kind of ground game would be out the window with the loss of Lewis.  Were they serious, or was this a carefully planned media release to motivate Jamal Lewis?

Although rookie running back James Davis and Jerome Harrison have shown promise at the running back position, they at this point are only nice complements to Jamal Lewis.

In the preseason, Lewis demonstrated the ability to smash the hole with violence and displayed that he still has his hard-nosed running style.  I am, as any Browns fan should be, ecstatic that Lewis is still a Brown.

I too am glad that the Browns kept Jamal Lewis, as it was the obvious move to make with neither Jerome Harrison nor James Davis having proven that they can carry the full load at the NFL level.

To be fair to the Browns, I don’t think the rumors of Lewis’ impending demise came from the organization at all. With Mangini following the Belichick style of providing as little information as possible, the writers in Cleveland have to find stories somewhere. Because Lewis is older, carries a pretty decent-sized salary, and appeared more expendable with the emergence of James Davis, it was a reasonable rumor to put out there (and was seconded by other sites who were playing the same guessing game). I don’t think the Browns were trying to send a message to a 30 year old RB who has been around the block a few times and understands the business of the NFL.

Chalk this one up to Cleveland writers needing something to write about, and this being the most compelling story to drive traffic. I’m not saying they were irresponsible in running the story (I talked about it too), just that I don’t think they were going off of any specific information from the organization itself.

Either way, I’m glad Jamal will be back this year to mentor Jerome and James, and provide a hammer late in games and on short-yardage plays. The Browns still may not be a playoff team, but we’re a better team with Lewis than without him.
