Fantasy Football Week 4 Start ‘Em, Sit ‘Em Lineup Advice and Projections

by Jerod @ 2009-09-29 104 Comments Email Post

       BallHype: hype it up!

Looking back at my Week 3 Start Em, Sit Em post as I begin Week 4’s, and it was a pretty solid week.

The definite hits: Derrick Mason (start), Brent Celek (start), Denver D (start), Carson Palmer (sit), Ben Watson (sit), Donnie Avery (sit).

The definite misses: Trent Edwards (start), Dallas D (sit).

The ones I predicted relatively well but touchdowns (or lack thereof) skewed value: Steve Slaton (start), Cedric Benson (sit).

All in all, a pretty solid week, and hopefully most of the 157 comments on that post led to sound fantasy decision making for everyone.

And now, it’s time to do it all over again.

As we pointed out in our recently posted NFL Week 4 TV schedule, odds, and picks post, the following teams all have byes this weekend: Arizona Cardinals, Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, Philadelphia Eagles. Obviously keep that in mind when you’re setting your lineups.

And remember: I’m trying to avoid the obvious choices here and instead pinpoint guys that folks might be on the fence about. And as we do every week, I will do my absolute best to answer every question that comes through in the comment section.

[Editor's Note: At some point in the not-to-distant future, MSF will be holding special, "members-only" Sunday morning live chats to help you out with all of your last minute fantasy football decision making. We are going to be hosting these sessions at our new MSF community at Explodium.com.

I'll be writing a post at some point soon telling you about Explodium, but it's pretty badass. When you click on the link, you do have to sign up, but it's free...and trust me, the benefits are there well beyond our Sunday morning fantasy help.]

Now, onto the Week 4 start ‘em, sit ‘em picks:

Week 4 Start ‘Em, Sit ‘Em Lineup Advice

Week 4 Start ‘Em, Sit ‘Em Quarterbacks

Start ‘Em: Eli Manning, New York Giants (at Kansas City)

fantasy football week 4 start em, sit em lineup advice, projections: eli manning, knowshon moreno, brandon marshall, dustin keller, cincinnati dLast week against Tampa Bay, Eli Manning completed only 14 passes for 161 yards but connected on two TD passes. The rapport that he is developing with Steve Smith is awesome for fantasy owners of both.

For the season, Manning now has five TD passes and only one INT, throwing two touchdowns in each of the last two weeks.

Kansas City is 20th in the NFL against the pass so far this year, and that includes one of their three games coming against the inept JaMarcus Russell. After Kevin Kolb torched the Chiefs last weekend, they have now given up five TD passes and intercepted only one.

The Giants are still a run-first team, but Eli will be able to pick his spots and have another solid day.

Eli Manning Week 4 projection: 200 passing yards, 2 TDs

Other QBs I like in Week 4: Carson Palmer (@ CLE); Shaun Hill (vs STL); Jay Cutler (vs DET)

Sit ‘Em: Philip Rivers, San Diego Chargers (at Pittsburgh)

post thumbnail

Philip Rivers was a revelation last season, tallying 4000+ yards and 34 TDs. So far in 2009, however, Rivers is only on pace for 16 TD passes. I think Rivers is fine, and I have him as a #1 QB in a couple of my leagues, but I don’t like his matchup this week at all.

Pittsburgh is now 1-2 after losing to Cincinnati last weekend. Still, the Steelers held Carson Palmer and a pretty good Bengals’ passing game to only 183 yards and 1 TD.

At home, with their backs against the wall a bit, I think the Steelers are going to come out and deliver a nasty defensive performance. Without a healthy LT in the backfield — or  a rusty one if he returns — to balance out the SD offense, I think Rivers could find the going tough against the Steelers, even with Troy Polamalu still out.

(For the record, I am not sitting Rivers in any of the leagues in which I have him, mainly because I don’t have a better alternative. Remember, whether you start someone or sit them is all relative based on your roster. Just temper your expectations for Rivers this week.)

Philip Rivers Week 4 projection: 240 passing yards, 1 TD, 1 INT

Other QBs I don’t like in Week 4: Aaron Rodgers (@ MIN); Ben Roethlisberger (vs SD);

Week 4 Start ‘Em, Sit ‘Em Running Backs

Start ‘Em: Knowshon Moreno, Denver Broncos (vs Dallas)

It looks like the time may be here to start penciling Knowshon Moreno into your lineups on a weekly basis.

The talented rookie rushed 21 times for 90 yards a score against the Raiders last Sunday. No, the Raiders are not great at stopping the run, but neither is Moreno’s Week 4 opponent Dallas.

The Cowboys are 17th in the NFL right now against the run, giving up 114.7 yards per game, and I think the Broncos will feed Moreno the ball early and often this week.

In PPR leagues, Moreno’s value is not quite as high, as he has only caught two passes this year. But with 17 and 21 carries over the last two weeks respectively, it looks like Moreno has vaulted over Correll Buckhalter for the #1 RB job in Denver.

That makes him worthy of a start in most leagues.

Knownshon Moreno Week 4 projection: 85 yards rushing, 10 yards receiving, 1 TD

Other RBs I like in Week 4: Cedric Benson (@ CLE); Matt Forte (vs DET); Whoever starts at RB for the Redskins (vs TB) — check the injury reports on Clinton Portis this week and pick up Ladell Betts if Portis can’t go; Leon Washington (@ NO); Glen Coffee (vs STL)

Sit ‘Em: Fred Taylor, New England Patriots (vs Baltimore)

Fred Taylor was his old, awesome self last week against Atlanta, rumbling for 105 yards and a score. You will be tempted to start him this week, but keep two things in mind:

  1. Baltimore’s defense is still great even without Rex Ryan, and they are giving up only 51 yards per game on the ground without having yielding a TD this season.
  2. You never know which New England running back will get the carries in a given week. Taylor has carried 9, 8, and 21 times this season, and still shares a backfield with Sammy Morris, Kevin Faulk, and Laurence Maroney.

Taylor will always be a threat this season to vulture a TD, as he did in Week 1, and he is the guy to play from the New England backfield if you have to play one of them this week. But there should be better options out there than a 33-year old running back in a pass-first offense against the league’s best run defense.

Fred Taylor Week 3 projection: 35 yards rushing, 0 TD

Other RBs I don’t like in Week 4: Steven Jackson (@SF); Reggie Bush (vs NYJ);

Week 4 Start ‘Em, Sit ‘Em Wide Receivers

Start ‘Em: Brandon Marshall, Denver Broncos (vs Dallas)

fantasy football week 4 start em, sit em lineup advice, projections: eli manning, knowshon moreno, brandon marshall, dustin keller, cincinnati dAfter an understandably slow start to the season, considering all his self-created off field distractions, Brandon Marshall appears poised to reclaim his spot among the top fantasy WRs.

His 5-catch, 67-yard, 1-TD performance last week against Oakland should be all the convincing you need to get him back in your lineups and keep him there.

The Broncos may be a fraudulent 3-0, but winning and being in first place have a way of getting even the biggest malcontents to play hard. I still don’t trust Dallas’ secondary (and neither should you, as they are 27th in the NFL against the pass) but, like Josh McDaniels, I am starting to trust Brandon Marshall more and more each week.

Brandon Marshall Week 4 projection: 7 catches, 105 yards, TD

Other WRs I like in Week 4: Braylon Edwards (vs CIN) — but ONLY if Derek Anderson starts at QB; Chad Ochocinco (@ CLE); Jerricho Cotchery (@ NO); Steve Smith (@ KC);

Sit ‘Em: Roy Williams, Dallas Cowboys (at Denver)

Through three games, Roy Williams has only eight catches for 179 yards and one score, which came in Week 1 against the terrible Tampa Bay Buccaneers secondary. And during last night’s Monday night game, Williams let a potential TD pass bounce off of his hands.

With the Dallas running game looking more and more dominant by the week, something tells me Tony Romo will continue to rely on it and be a little more reluctant to take as many shots down field. That, combined with Williams’ horrible matchup this week — Denver is currently 2nd in the NFL in pass defense and has not given up a TD pass while notching five INTs — make him a worthy candidate to sit if you have decent alternatives.

Roy Williams Week 4 projection: 3 catches, 34 yards

Other WRs I don’t like in Week 4: Marques Colston (vs NYJ) — but with the caveat that I will probably start him in my leagues, despite the fact that he’s facing Darrelle Revis, who has been superb in shutting down opposing teams’ best WRs; Dwayne Bowe (vs NYG); Ted Ginn Jr (vs SD)

Week 4 Start ‘Em, Sit ‘Em Tight Ends

Before I get into this week’s tight ends, can I just pat myself on the back a bit for touting Vernon Davis all year. I picked him as a “start em” guy and a sleeper in Weeks 1 and 2 and watched him struggle a bit, but still maintained that this will be the year Davis becomes a star.

Ironically, last week when I picked Brent Celek instead of Vernon Davis, the 49ers’ freak of nature tight end went off, catching seven passes for 96 yards and two touchdowns.

Unless you have another really good option moving forward, I consider Davis close to a weekly start.

Start ‘Em: Dustin Keller, New York Jets (at New Orleans)

Dustin Keller struggled last week against Tennessee, catching only two passes. This comes on the heels of a three catch day against New England. I think it’s fair to say that Keller will have his ups and downs this year, especially with a rookie calling the shots at QB, but he does have a good matchup this week against New Orleans.

Consider the following facts:

  • New Orleans is ranked 22nd against the pass this year in terms of yards
  • In Week 2, the Saints allowed eight catches and 104 yards to Eagles TE Brent Celek
  • In Week 3, the Saints allowed five catches and 34 yards to Buffalo TE Derek Fine

Hence, opportunities should be there for Keller to have a solid afternoon. There are better options for sure, but if you own Celek or Tony Gonzalez, both of whom have byes this week, Keller is a solid fill-in candidate.

Dustin Keller Week 4 projection: 5 catches, 65 yards, 1 TD

Other TEs I like in Week 4: Vernon Davis (vs STL); Owen Daniels (vs OAK)

Sit ‘Em: Visanthe Shiancoe, Minnesota Vikings (vs Green Bay)

Not only does Shiancoe only have six catches all season, but Green Bay has not given up more than two receptions to a tight end in any game. Even as a bye week fill-in, there are much better options that Shiancoe.

Visanthe Shiancoe Week 4 projection: 2 catches, 17 yards

Other TEs I don’t like in Week 4: Greg Olsen (vs DET); Ben Watson (vs BAL)

Week 4 Start ‘Em, Sit ‘Em Defense / Special Teams Units

Start ‘Em: Cincinnati Bengals (at Cleveland Browns)

This one is pretty easy.

Cincinnati has a much improved defense that is ranked in the top half of Yahoo leagues. This week, they face a Cleveland Browns team that appears to be historically bad.

Don’t overthink it, even though it’s the Bengals.  Start ‘em.

Cincinnati Bengals Week 4 projection: 13 or fewer points allowed, 4 sacks, 2 INTs

Other D/ST units I like in Week 4: San Francisco (vs STL); Buffalo (at Miami); Chicago (vs DET)

Sit ‘Em: Denver Broncos (vs Dallas Cowboys)

The Broncos currently have the #1 rated defense in Yahoo. However, remember that two of their games have come against the two worst offenses in football: Cleveland and Oakland.

This week, Denver plays Dallas, which has the best backfield trio in the league. The Cowboys aren’t explosive enough in the passing game to put up huge numbers on Denver, and Tony Romo will probably turn the ball over once or twice, but I wouldn’t expect Denver to keep getting as many sacks or holding their opponents to three points every week.

Denver Broncos Week 4 projection: 20+ points given up, 1 sack, 1 INT

Other D/ST units I don’t like in Week 4: New England (vs BAL); San Diego (@ PIT)

    hi jerod,

your suggestions last week helped me a lot! thanks so much! and so im here again for your advice for week 4 regarding my RBs

    currently i have:

    Darren Sproles
    Ladanian Tomlinson
    Ray Rice
    Willis McGahee
    Pierre Thomas
    Mike Bell
    Felix Jones
    Fred Jackson

i need to start 4 of these. my league is not PPR.

if im lucky i might be able to pick up glen coffee and knowshon moreno from the waivers tonight. so my question is, IF i am able to acquire both, who should i start? and if im not able to acquire these two, who should i start?

    thanks as always!

I would be starting P. Thomas, W. McGahee, R. Rice, and D. Sproles. Personally I don't see any other way to play that one out M. Bell, LT, and F. Jones are all injured and with the Exception of LT the others might not even suit up. Now F. Jackson has M. Lynch comming back which isn't the main reason I wouldnt play him but it contributes, the main reason is MIA is tough agisnt the run. Even though I am not a fan of starting both R. RIce and W. McGahee i dont think you have an option. -Jay Fletch

Andy, this is a tough one as we need to see what the injury status will be for LT and Felix Jones. I do like Coffee and Moreno this week to have solid outings.

I probably would not play the SD running backs, who have to face Pittsburgh's D in Pittsburgh. And the Fred Jackson gravy train might not be as tasty anymore with Marshawn Lynch back.

If you get Coffee and Moreno, I'd go as follows: Pierre Thomas, McGahee, Coffee, Moreno (scared of Ray Rice not scoring…remember, his TD came against Cleveland).

If you don't get them: Thomas, McGahee, Rice, and Felix Jones (if healthy). If Jones can't go, play whoever is starting in SD.

    Andy Reply:

yeah that makes sense. i too believe rice will be shut down by NE. they're going to try and make flacco win it for them. IF i end up getting percy harvin or M-sims-walker in the waivers, should i start one of them in place of Rice as flex?

    Reply

    JerodMSF Reply:

Man, that is splitting hairs. I still don't totally trust Percy Harvin, and his TD last week came on special teams, but he has scored in three straight weeks. And they may have something special cooked up for GB this weekend. Once Sunday morning rolled around, I'd probably bite the bullet and throw Harvin in there one more time. I don't trust Sims-Walker enough…yet…to place him over a starting RB on a good offense, lack of goalline touches or not.

just wanted to give you an update buddy!

so i managed to pick up coffee off the waiver! im really happy about that. harvin and moreno though were picked up by others. im not too bummed about not getting harvin cuz i have vincent jackson, wayne and welker for my 3 starting WRs.

i just need to find a good kicker to replace akers who has a bye week. currently the options (FA) are:

Kaeding, Prater, Karney, Nedney, Folk and Lindell from the available kickers with decent matchups. can you suggest a couple good ones for week 4?

    thanks dude!

I appreciated this advice you gave last week (though my Trent Edwards/TO combo was a swift kick in the pants). Hopefully this isn't too long, but I am in a bit of a bind.
3 weeks in, and I am 1-2. The worst part, I have the second highest total points in my league, but magically seem to get the worst match-up ever week.

OK my Roster for week 4 (praying that McNabb comes back healthy after bye week)

    Starting
    K. Collins
    Moss
    S. Smith (NYG)
    M. Sims -Walker
    AP
    M. Barber
    K. Winslow (Celek is on a Bye week)

    Bench
    Owens (so mad)
    H. Ward
    Sproles
    F. Jones (injury)

I think that I have the most favorable matchups sitting in my lineup. Are there any changes you would recommend?

    JerodMSF Reply:

Yeah, Edwards and TO really let me down. That was disappointing.

Obviously you have to wait and see whether LT is playing (to know Sproles' value) and whether Felix Jones will play or not. Either way, as long as Barber plays, you want AP and Barber as your RBs.

If you have a flex slot (I'm assuming that's where Sims-Walker is now) then I'd put Jones in there if he's healthy. If not, I actually like Ward over Sims-Walker. Hines is due to get into the end zone and I think Pittsburgh is going to play really well this weekend against San Diego.

Are you sure there is no one on the waiver wire better than Kerry Collins? If not, he might have a decent day this week going up against Jacksonville, but still…

    Reply

    southwick Reply:

I can't stomach throwing T. Edwards back out there.
    My waiver wire choices are:
    Campbell @ TB
    Sanchez @ NO
    Favre @ GB
    Collins @ Jax

Collins was my one week pick as I am most likely going to grab Kolb to be Mcnabbs backup after the Bye.
Looking at the strength of the matchups I saw Ten as having a must win vs. the worst pass def. in Football.

The Cowboys fan in me might be biased though, and rejecting the idea of starting a Redskin's QB.

    Reply

    JerodMSF Reply:

Oh that's right…duh…Edwards is your backup.

If it were me, I'd think long and hard about Favre. He is a complete wild card Monday night. I could see him imploding and throwing 3-4 picks, playing very conservatively and relying on Peterson, or just totally dominating and throwing 3-4 TDs. Seriously…would any of those surprise you? But I think his "upside" is the highest of all your options.

Otherwise, I'd go Campbell, and then Sanchez. Campbell isn't great by any means, but TB is TERRIBLE in the secondary. New Orleans is still suspect in pass defense, but trusting a rookie QB is tough.

If I were setting the lineup, I'd rank you choices: Favre, Edwards, Campbell, Sanchez, Collins (just not a big fan of Kerry)

    Lou D. Reply:

Edwards and TO let me down last week too. I was in a dog-fight to stay undefeated. I lost by 10 points in a PPR tleagues so it was close. They gave me very little (TO zero). Then I needed a good to strong game from DeAngelo Williams Monday night … decent first half … close game … and they stop giving him the ball. I don't get it. I lost.

You gave some great advice – my friend started Kolb along with Knox and Sim-Walker (as you advised) and won for the first time this week. Thanks for the great advice, J-Rod. Much appreciated.

    Reply

    JerodMSF Reply:

Lou, thanks…although there were definitely hits and misses last week, as always. After reading your first line about Edwards and TO (both of whom I thought would have good weeks last week) I figured you were commenting to lambaste me. Glad the advice worked out for someone though!

Yeah, I didn't understand the Deangelo Williams thing. Not sure what John Fox is thinking these days…

  6. EdMos says:

Hey, can I get some advice on this trade? I'm kind of stuck on whether I like it b/c I think LT is so unpredictable going forward. It's LT, Reggie Bush, and Carlson for Boldin and Tony Gonzalez. I like Boldin, but I can also move Cotchery up from my flex to the WR2 spot. I have Steven Jackson, but after that it drops off.

    Reply

    JerodMSF Reply:

I'm not a big fan of it.

You're right, LT is totally unpredictable and I would want to see him play first before dealing for him. Bush is going to be up and down all year. I don't think he'll get the touches as a running back to warrant every week flex status. There are just too many options in NO.

Boldin and Gonzalez are the two best players in the deal I think. Cotchery is fine as a flex play…I think you should stand pat.

    Sproles

    T.J. Housh or

New England is doing a pretty good job against the pass this year and completely shut down Joe Flacco last weekend. The Pats are 6th in yards allowed and have only given up 3 TDs. The Saints, Sanchez's opponent are in the 20s in yards allowed, but have only given up three TDs as well. Sanchez does have the more favorable matchup, and even though I don't like rookie QBs, I'd probably go with him.

Nedney is a solid choice for this week.

I like Housh over Crayton, as the Broncos are very strong against the pass.

I would start Coffee or TC this week over any of your other options honestly. Keep an eye on San Diego to see how much Sproles will play. But definitely grab Coffee or Choice if you can.

Polamalu is out and Cincy is playing Cleveland…you start Cincy and don't look back!

As for Tashard Choice, he's a great option. Felix Jones is out and the Cowboys have to be worried now about their incredible backfield holding up throughout the season. I think even when all three are healthy they will rotate a good amount. With only two of them, each has value. Choice is a good flex…choice…for week 4.

Good work on Coffee. He'll be a solid play for a couple of weeks.

Prater is tempting, but he is also inconsistent. I really like Nedney because San Francisco's offense is just good enough to drive on people, but always to score. He should get lots of mid-range FG opportunities, especially against a subpar D like St. Louis.

    Andy Reply:

    JeRod!

yeah i was leaning towards nedney too. however the dilemma i know have is who to drop for him! i dropped akers and picked up coffee. on the bench i have LT/sproles(depending on who starts against PIT), mike bell, fred jackson and ray rice. i feel that of these, getting rid of bell would be a safe bet since thomas seems like he's going to be the #1 back for NO even after bell comes back. im keeping rice around so that i can trade for a QB next week. what do you think?

    Reply

    JerodMSF Reply:

Yeah, that's a strong list of RBs on your bench. I'd probably drop Bell I suppose, but try to pick him back up after this week. Also, monitor how Buffalo splits carries between Fred Jackson and Marshawn Lynch this week. You may want to try and trade Jackson now to someone who doesn't realize he's going to be in a running back rotation from this point forward. His numbers look pretty good right now and could carry some value.

    JerodMSF Reply:

You're going to have to track injuries with this one. I like Choice though, mainly because Pitt is so strong against the run. I'm not buying Denver as a tough run D…they've just faced too relatively weak offenses in the first three weeks of the season. Even if Barber plays, I think he'll be spelled often by Choice. The Cowboys are going to be careful with their backs.

Love the site and your blog Jerod – always interesting and insightful. In a 12-team non-PPR league and I would appreciate advice on where to shore up my team for the long-haul (wishful thinking, I know). Also, do I have enough among my current receiving corps to fill the required 3 WR slots this week or should I drop Stuckey or Caldwell for someone on the wire (e.g. M. Wallace or one of the Titans, MSW and Garcon are already gone). I also start 2 RBs and a flex.

    Here's my current roster: QBs – Schaub, Sanchez; RBs – P. Thomas, C. Johnson, D. Brown, G. Coffee, L. Washington; WRs – A. Johnson, S. Smith (NYG), E. Bennett, D. Mason, A. Caldwell, C. Stuckey; TE – Todd Heap; K – J. Carney; DEF – Minnesota.

    Thanks so much.

Thanks for the kind words Allie!

Here is what I would do:

    QB – Matt Schaub
    RB – C. Johnson
    RB – P. Thomas
    WR – A. Johnson
    WR – S. Smith
    WR – A. Caldwell
    Flex – Glen Coffee

I do think you have enough. I like Caldwell this weekend because teams' third team receivers have killed the Browns this year. Look at what Kelley Washington did last week. I don't know if Caldwell will get a TD, but I bet he gets 5-6 catches and some decent yardage, which is about what you'd hope for with any of the guys on waivers.

I'd like to get your opinion on my lineup this week.

    Starting
    Flacco
    R Moss
    H Ward
    P Garcon
    B Jacobs
    Julius Jones
    Cooley
    Tynes
    San Fran

    Bench
    Warner – Bye
    Roy Williams
    Desean – Bye
    W Parker – turf toe?
    R Rice
    Kevin Smith – injured?
    Denver

Possible FA pickups: Cinci Defense, San Diego Defense, Darren McFadden, Nate Burleson, Todd Heap, Nedney

There are no flex positions. No PPR. Agree with who I'm starting? What's your opinion of who to start at Def out of who I have or who I could possibly add? If Kevin Smith plays this week, do you like him over Julius Jones? How about Willie Parker over Smith or Jones? Tynes or Nedney at kicker?

    Thanks in advance.

    JerodMSF Reply:

San Fran's D is a great choice this week against St. Louis and Kyle Boller. I like Cincy's too against Cleveland, but San Fran's is better for the long haul.

I agree with sitting Roy Williams for Garcon. Make Roy and Romo prove they have some rapport, and Denver's D is not a good matchup.

I am not a fan of Julius Jones in general, especially on the road where he tends to struggle, but the Colts do not have a great run D. Since Jones has a better chance to get carries near the goalline, I would begrudgingly play him over Ray Rice and Smith, even if healthy, who has to go up against a tough Bears D while dinged up.

No on Parker. I just don't trust him yet.

Tynes or Nedney…wash. They're kickers, who the hell knows. I personally would go Nedney, based on gut feel, but NY is playing KC and should be able to score some points. That's a "pick 'em"

Being from the Cincinnati area its hard to trust the Bengals D. Its tempting, but its been a rough 20 years. Seems like when they are supposed to be good, they aren't. And when they are not supposed to be they are….

I actually kind of like Kerry Collins this week because Jacksonville's pass defense is awful. Shaun Hill is the safer pick though. It depends on the rest of your roster. If you think you need 20+ pts to win, go with Collins…knowing he's capable of really crappy days too. If you just need a guaranteed 10-12 points (depending on your scoring system) go with Hill.

Long-term I like Orton over Collins…because I doubt Collins finishes the year as starter unless the Titans make a miraculous turnaround. This week, however, Collins has a nice matchup against the Jags' terrible pass defense. It could be a high scoring game because the Titans and Jags defenses have been putrid this year. I don't see much of a difference between Orton and Collins this week…so I'd say go for it because Orton will be a more solid play for the balance of the year.

Thanks for the advice last week, as I won 112-104 putting me at 2-1 on the season.

I plan on starting Cedric Benson at 1 of my rb positions, and was curious as to who to start out of Chris Johnson against Jax or Glen Coffee (who I picked up last week off the waiver wire).

I also have a question as to my wr players this week. I typically play a 2 rb/3 wr set with Colston and Wayne being 2 of the 3 wr. My question is which 2 should I start other than Wayne who will play against the Rams: Colston against the Jets, Cotchery against the Saints, Manningham against the Chiefs, or Sims-Walker against Tennessee?

I need to make a comeback this week. Thanks for your recommendations:)__Also, should I play Sproles with LT hoping to make a start this week? __I am hurting with RB too.. I put alot trust into Gore.. now I have R. Williams, D. Ward (?) and C. Taylor.. who is the better start?__Thanks:)

    Reply

    JerodMSF Reply:

I really like Brandon Marshall this week. I think we are going to see him start producing big numbers again as he emerges from his cocoon of self-absorption we all saw during the offseason. I also like Mike Sims-Walker. He's had six catches each of the last two weeks and is becoming David Garrard's most consistent target. Tennessee has done a good job of defending the pass this season either.

After that, you have three guys with explosive potential but that I don't totally trust. Santonio Holmes had a great start to the season, then flopped with one catch last week. Same with Johnny Knox, although he got into the endzone. Holmes faces a San Diego pass defense that is in the top 10 in the league and has been very solid (although granted, two of their games came against Oakland and Miami). But Holmes has dropped four passes in two weeks, which is worrisome. And I cannot in good faith recommend a rookie WR when you are in desperate need of a win.

Thus, I'll suggest Lee Evans for your flex spot. Miami has struggled against the pass this year (264 yards per game, 4 TDs, 0 INTs) and Evans has always played well against Miami. He has 8 TDs in 10 career games against the Phins, and his 19.8 yard per catch average is actually 3.9 yards higher than his already high 15.9 yard career average. Evans has not gotten out of the gates this season, but I'm not giving up on him and the Bills' passing game yet…and this could be a good matchup for a rebound.

As for LT/Sproles, you just have to wait and see how that shakes out. If LT starts, I think you have to sit Sproles. But if LT is still gimpy, he may not play the whole game. Not sure you can decide that until Sunday morning.

I don't like Ward, whose carries have gone from 12-9-2 over the first three weeks of the season. I actually think Ricky Williams could have a nice game on Sunday with the Dolphins surely relying even more on the run with Chad Henne behind center. Are you in a PPR league? If so, Chester Taylor is not a bad option, as he plays on third downs and actually is among the team leaders in catches for the Vikings.

    Jerod,

Nice article! For week 4, do you start Sanchez or Rodgers at QB? Rodgers' talent is awesome, but his OL is not. Sanchez is likely going to have to throw, and Saints passing defense stinks. Then again – I sat Rodgers and started Rivers last week and regretted it, ended up dumping Rivers to the wire.

Of these six, which one do you sit in week 4? I think Pierre Garcon only because he's not the top receiver on the team (standard scoring, not PPR):
    Julius Jones
    Glenn Coffee
    Maurice Jones-Drew
    Jerricho Cotchery
    Mike Sims-Walker
    Pierre Garcon

    Thanks!

I share your concern over Rodgers' O-line, and love Sanchez's matchup, but I still start Rodgers and here's why:

    1) The emotion and energy of he Packers-Vikings game will be amazing. I would not be surprised to see Favre and Rodgers get into a shootout. Of the two, Rodgers is far more likely to have to rely on his passing game because the Vikings stuff the run so well.

    2) Sanchez is still a rookie, and the Saints did a pretty good job of bottling up Buffalo last week.

    3) If you have Rodgers, Monday Night becomes even more exciting for you. If all else is even, why not add some extra intrigue to the biggest game of the week?

I hate Julius Jones, but I'll agree on Garcon. He still has more proving to do to gain weekly start fantasy status.

    1 – Marques Colston
    2 – Santana Moss

    5 – Brandon Stokley

Looks like you had them ranked right all along! I thought about going Moss over Colston because Darelle Revis has been shutting down opposing team's top WRs…but let's just say that I trust Brees, Colston, and the Saints…even against the Jets…more than I trust Campbell, Moss, and the Redskins. Both are very good plays this week though.

Yes, start Brady. But looks like you figured that out.

As for the RBs, Pierre Thomas is your #1 and Marion Barber should play, so throw him in there with confidence. I doubt Dallas would let him go if he wasn't close to 100%. Leon Washington after that, and I like him more than your other WR options if you need a flex.

I like Wallace for a number of reasons.

1 – The Colts offense will score on Seattle so Wallace will be playing from behind and throwing. (This could happen in Chicago too, but Detroit has been keeping games relatively close early on)
2 – No Dwight Freeney means the Colts' pass rush won't be as devastating when they get ahead
3 – Still no Bob Sanders
4 – I don't trust rookie QBs and only play them in fantasy when absolutely necessary, especially against solid to good defenses.

Then, I would go with Sims-Walker…especially if you are in a PPR league. He's not as explosive as either Garcon or Knox, but does have a great matchup against Tennessee and six catches in back to back games. Knox and Garcon rely on big plays and TDs for their value, Sims-Walker will provide at least some value even if he doens't get into the end zone, especially this week.

If you want one separator, it may be this: Brown has been much more explosive in the passing game. Personally, I would start him…and then, of course, wait for Addai to score all the fantasy points!

Correll Buckhalter is interesting, and has done well, but he's also feasted on Cleveland and Oakland the last couple of weeks. Dallas will present more of a challenge, and Moreno should get more and more carries.

Why Sims-Walker over Edwards/Manningham? He's been more consistent, with 6 catches each of the last two weeks, and has a great matchup against Tennessee's terrible D. And I like Edwards over Manningham because Derek Anderson is the QB, which should help Braylon make some noise downfield.

No, he won't carry as much if Westbrook is playing, but what are the odds of the aging Westbrook staying healthy all year? And McCoy will still get some touches every week as the Eagles try to keep Westbrook upright.

In Choice, you have a back who is in a three-man rotation. He has great value this week, but what about when Barber and Jones are back?

So much of the answer to this question relies on injuries, which can't be predicted. In the end, I'd go with the guy in a two-man backfield, not the one in the three-man backfield. I'd stick with McCoy, unless you are desperate for this week.

And Beanie Wells had 2 carries for -2 yards last week and is a fumble machine. Hang onto him for a couple more weeks, but he could be someone you drop if he can't get his act together.

WRs I think are pretty simple, mainly because of Bowe's injury. Ward, Manningham, and Walter are all healthy and producing…Bowe is injured, on a terrible offense, and playing the Giants. Sit him with confidence.

Good question. Just tweeted about this (http://www.twitter.com/JerodMSF)

Sal Pal just said on ESPN that Wes Welker should play today. He's officially a GT decision, but he practiced all week and the Patriots need him to help combat the Ravens' blitz. Continue to track it, but I'd start him.

I would rather have McCoy on my roster than Washington for the balance of the season, but if you're looking for help immediately, Washington could have more value. He will probably get more touches than McCoy over the next few weeks if Brian Westbrook is healthy. That said, I still expect McCoy to rotate with Westbrook a reasonable amount…and if Westbrook gets hurt again, McCoy becomes a stud.

That said, the Jets play Oakland in Week 7, which could be a good game for Washington. It's too early to tell what McCoy's role could be for that game.

If I were you, I'd take McCoy over Washington…but just know that if Westbrook is healthy, Washington is probably the better play in Week 7.
