I think the fact of the matter is that there are other supplements that do just as good of a job as steroids and which are considered legal. Maybe Pujols isn't taking a banned substance but he is most definitely taking different supplements that affect his play. I don't blame him or condone him for doing as such. There is a level of dedication that is needed to put forth for each job, but regardless of whether is a steroid or not, external sources are being used to achieve greatness, not just hard work and insane skills (although those are of course added into the equation).

Hank Aaron, who is a known user of amphetamines, is your home run champ?

I too do not believe Pujols is an user / abuser, but also now have doubts of every player ever. Even Ruth engaged in use of an illegal substance - alcohol was banned during his time.

Personally, I find the game to be around 20 times bigger than the "era" and believe fans are implicated in the "problem" around 20%. No more than that, but it's time we see this as a "we" thing rather than a "them" issue. Are you using any substances in your life to enhance your focus, your energy, your well being? Using any substance to wind down, to escape, to entertain?

@JRod,

Thanks for your response!!! I really do understand the outpouring of letters you receive about that topic. And it is your job to respond to you supporters. I basically responded because I didn't want to see you become what you have been fighting against the past few weeks. Keep up the good work and I look forward to your future posts.

@Lee Yunker,

That is, I believe, an exceedingly fair critique. I have admittedly been caught up discussing the issue more than I'd planned on a) because I truly care about it and b) because I still receive plenty of email and comments asking me about it. There is, of course, at point at which it becomes too much and perhaps we are there.

But your comment is probably about as good a sign as any that it's time to move on. While I've always looked at this blog as my avenue to say whatever I want to about sports, the more important focus is on giving readers what they want to read.

Thanks for being forthright with your opinion Lee. I'm sure others out there share it.

This is the third time I've commented on one of your articles. And I back your stance 100%. And most of the things you have discussed in your articles I have agreed with. But these articles about steroids and players you keep writing are getting old. Kinda like the 1 billionth season of "The Bachelor" or "American Idol". It's starting to sound like your trying to throw yourself a pity party and each new steroid related blog/article is a new invitation. Why don't you try writing about the upcoming trading deadline, up and coming players, or what your original article that sparked this controversy was about (Fantasy Baseball).

I believe a lot of fans, especially hardcore ones, and MLB, as a whole, want this topic about PED's to fade to the back burner. The only way that is going to happen is to stop talking about it and allow the corrected system to do it's job. I hope that all sports media can start to turn it's eyes towards the good in baseball instead of the checkered past.

I sincerely enjoy your articles. Even the above one. But you got your point across. Please be the bigger journalist and move on.
