JRod, I guess I owe you $5 for posting a link to this blog on my blog. You can either take that back as a beer sometime, or link back to my blog sometime, which is available now for the bargain price of just $4.50. Maybe I'll have to write you a check for fifty cents. This is so freaking confusing.

Anyhow, the AP is living in some sort of fantasy world with this. That's what I guess I'm trying to say.

Looks like the AP is instituting an anti-monetization of their content. Would not be very difficult for google, dogpile, bing, etc to quit crawling their content. I mean, if the AP is really this stupid, I strongly doubt they have the technical savvy to adjust their robots.txt files much less index cores. What a bunch of idiots.....

Jerod,
Well written post and yes this does impact the sports world as sports fans rely on the Internet to keep in touch. A true sports fan can't wait for the paper to hit the lawn to learn of the great things such as your White Sox perfect game.

We've seen this before. An industry that has an opportunity and takes an old school and restrictive stance that goes against the grain. It was called the music industry. iTunes kind of took care of that and has enabled music fans to levels they have never had.

If the AP feels that it has such a strong case, it should simply include a NO INDEX tag on all content and see what the world is like without Google. It would be like an album not on iTunes. It had better be good or if not its upside is limited.

AP should focus on monetization techniques that create a win/win for all. Google's Adsense program creates a win/win for bloggers. Why doesn't the AP take this type of approach? They could create an environment of control (which is what they want) while not putting up barriers that will eventually make their approach unsuccessful.

My prediction is that they will implement it and that they will die in the search engines and a true innovator will come along redefine the market place.

Now, get back to bringing us killer sports writing before the AP cuts you off! LOL

@MoonDog,

See, this is exactly what I see happening...which is why I think the AP's plan, as it is being currently explained, is incredibly myopic. Great point MoonDog.

I have an easy solution to the problem. Don't link to them. If you want to reference an article, simply write "according to the Associated Press" and be done with it.
