From strategic blunders to favortism towards less than marginal talent to not being able to recognize real prospective talent, Eric Wedge is not fit to manage a Little League team much less a Major League baseball club. I used to be a supporter of Mark Shapiro but due to his unwavering allegiance towards a Manager who has done absolutely nothing for the Cleveland Indians and their fans, I think that it may very well be time for Shapiro to leave as well. Perhaps the Dolans can get a group rate on two one-way tickets out of town for the both of them.

@Brad Emerine, as a White Sox fan I ask that the Indians kindly reconsider and sign Eric Wedge to a 5-year extension. Not that I'm biased or anything...

Loss to Cubs today (June 19)was awful. Led 7-0. Brought in four relievers in eighth when Lee should've been allowed to finish inning. Then, brought Perez in wenn he shouldn't have and kept him in two batters too long. Then brought in Herges when Wood should've been in for a four-out save.
Wood should've been in with a two-run lead for a four-out save.
FIRE WEDGE NOW!!!!!!!

[...] The Cleveland Indians were a trendy pick by many self-styled experts to not only win the mediocre AL Central this season, but to potentially win the American League pennant. However, after five weeks, the team has the worst record in not only the AL, but all of baseball. We’ve already seen Arizona Diamondback skipper Bob Melvin removed for a slow start in Phoenix, so it would not be capricious for Indians GM Mark Shapiro to bounce Eric Wedge as early as today.
He never produced and was temperamental. See Milton Bradley or Albert Belle to lesser degree.

Terry Pluto chronicles it all in this excellent book:

http://www.amazon.com/Dealing-Cleveland-Small-Market-Reinvented-Contender/dp/1598510495

Overall, Shapiro has been right far more than wrong, even on Wedge; but at this point, he should make the move. They're good friends and Wedge is "his guy" so it's tough. Wedge was NOT a bad hire back in 2003, but he's taken the team as far as he will, clearly.

why would the Indians get rid of Brandon Phillips? They've had a shortage of 2B's dating back to Carlos Baerga...

They have Jake Westrbook returning in a month. With Carmona, Lee, Westbrook and Pavano pitching as he has lately, those are four decent starters to go with a very solid lineup. Wood can be better, and likely will. Point being, far too much talent to have baseball's worst record on May 11.

"Very talented team" might be an over statement for their rotation and bullpen. The pitching staff had question marks entering the season and the answer is inconsistency and far cries from any Cy Young performances. A GM knee jerk right now should be a new pitching coach or a trade or AAA movement to shake things up or all of the above. I just don't think a single move or even a Torre or a LaRussa could even get the Indians situation off to any hot start this year. You are right the Indians second half 2008 and Cliff Lee ended up making them the trendy pick, but I was never sold on them preseason.

True, though they've done those firings before. Wedge is overdue. He failed miserably in 2006 and 2008 with no punishment. If you want to give him another month, fine, but clearly this very talented team is going nowhere.

Maybe the pitching coach needs to take a hike first and give Wedge and the team more time. 7 games back from the Royals is a couple win streaks away from being back in it by the all-star break.

Great article and yes, the Tribe has the worst record. Wedge needs to go. John Farrell would make an excellent replacement but I doubt he leaves Boston mid-season. He's awfully loyal to Terry...

Hey buddy, Cleveland has the worst record in baseball. That's what I put down. It's correct, so who is splitting hairs? The Nats DO NOT have the worst record.
