Thankfully, I am not a Reds fan, though I suppose they are my favorite NL Central team, and since I am covering them, I'll pull for them.

Perhaps, with a stacked 2009 team, if/when Dusty's boys underachieve, he'll get the axe. I guess that's the best hope.

AJ:

I have just two words for you: Dusty Baker. As a long-time Cubs fan, I commisserate with you in advance for Volquez's and Cueto's arms falling off. Harang's apparently has already. This is the future you have to look forward to. As great as your pitching staff looks now, by July I have to imagine that they are played out. If Chicago is any indication, it will take several years before Cincinnati has a chance to emerge from the damage that Dusty will wreak. The only surprise to me is that Neifi no longer has an everyday position with the Reds.

Yikes:

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=ArGZTQ4tIApC5ySlkg3bPoARvLYF?slug=ap-reds-sheffield&prov=ap&type=lgns

"Manager Dusty Baker said Thursday that he’s interested in adding Sheffield— a friend for many years—to the roster"

Quite a manager/leader. This guy needs to go at the end of this season, especially if the Reds dont finish with at least 85 wins.

He is about as popular in Cincy as Josh McDaniels is with the Denver Broncos fans.

Sheff would be an interesting pick up. I think Sheff is better than Junior and I know Sheff always brings it on the field – although he’s always been a distraction everywhere he goes in the clubhouse. I am a Dodger fan, so I remember when he seemed to be jealous of Shawn Green. And Sheff is good for about 2-3 ridiculous comments out of nowhere per season. Perhaps the young guys can be helped by his work ethic.

@Quinty, especially when you consider Dusty Baker's penchant for siding with vets over young guys. The Reds have a good core that needs to grow together. Gary Sheffield is not what they need. If he still had juice left in his bat, he wouldn't be available. Let another vet-laden team take him and try to work him in.

I would not sign Sheffield.

I echo Hal McCoy's sentiments on the matter:

Good piece Ari...I'm curious to know what your take is on the Reds interest with Gary Sheffield...signing him would seem to go against the "youth movement" which you have proposed by taking AB out of the hands of younger, developing players.

The Cubs are the favorite, no doubt. That said, the 2009 Cubs regular season will be inconsequential and very anticlimactic after the past two October disasters they and their fans have endured. (Cubs have not won a playoff GAME since Game 4 of the 2003 NLCS, I believe)

As for the Reds, they could finish as low as last or as high as second. Better chance to finish 2nd or 3rd than 5th or 6th in my view.

Dusty Baker is, sadly, the wild card. MLB skippers do matter, and he's one of the worst. Give the Reds a Ron Gardenhire or a Larussa and they would challenge the Cubs for first and be a strong playoff contender.

The Cubs have to be the favorites in NL Central. Edinson Volquez, however, is a real Cy Young candidate and has the third best ERA in spring training.
