@JRod,

I think Rose deserves the win. I was just saying that he isn't head and shoulders above Mayo.

Plus Rose made the playoffs as a 7 seed in the east.

And Mayo does have another great scorer on his team...Rudy Gay.

And Mayo did run the point a little bit this year. Just saying...not head and shoulders.

@Nicholas Gerlach, yes I do think Derrick Rose was head and shoulders above OJ Mayo -- but I say that with the caveat that I did not watch OJ Mayo play once this season.

But there are still a few reasons I say so:

1 - Rose produced for a playoff team while Mayo toiled on a team with few other scoring options.

2 - Rose plays one of the two premium NBA positions (PG and C) as among the top 10 in the league at his position as a rookie.

3 - Mayo's numbers went down across the board after the All-Star break (save for a 0.9 increase in assists per game that was almost offset by a 0.5 increase in TO per game.) Rose stayed very consistent after the break.

Look, this is not to say Mayo isn't a very good player, or that he would not be deserving in another season, but I don't think you can compare a point guard who produced like Rose did all year on a playoff team to a SG on a non-playoff team. For that reason, I think he was head and shoulders above everyone else in his rookie class.

Also,

only one winner wasn't a top 10 draft pick since the modern era of the NBA (shot clock, 3 pointer). That's pretty crazy.

Mark Jackson is still one of my favorite PG's of all time. I'm surprised he's not coaching somewhere.

Jrod,

Do you really think he was clearly head and shoulders above O.J. Mayo? hmmmmm...?

Also, that 2003-04 award LeBron James won was a crazy year...could have been D-Wade just as easily...or Carmelo
