World Baseball Classic Preview Part 1 – The Schedule and Participating Countries

Email Post Email Post

2009 World Baseball Classic Schedule and TicketsOn March 5, the second World Baseball Classic kicks off when defending champion Japan takes on China in the first game of Pool A at the Tokyo Dome.

Back in 2006, Japan won the first World Baseball Classic final over Cuba with pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka earning MVP honors. Matsuzaka went 3-0 with a 1.38 ERA during the tournament, and his countryman Ichiro Suzuki was also outstanding, hitting .364 and hitting safely in every game. Matsuzaka, of course, has since come over to the United States and now toes the rubber for the Boston Red Sox.

Both Matsuzaka and Ichiro were both named to the WBC All-Tournament team, along with fellow Major Leaguers Derek Jeter, Adrian Beltre, Ken Griffey Jr., and Chan Ho Park. Team USA lost to Mexico 2-1 in the final game of the second round to bow out of the tournament before it got to the final round at PETCO Park. Korea, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Japan were the final four teams in the first World Baseball Classic.

This year, Team USA has revenge on its mind. In a future post, we will break down the WBC 2009 rosters once they are announced on February 24th and eventually take a stab at some predictions. In this post we are going to break down the participating countries, the schedule, the various sites where games will be played, and provide links where you can buy tickets if you are thinking of attending any of the games in North America.

2009 World Baseball Classic Pools

As in 2006, the 16 participating countries will be split into four pools: A, B, C, and D. Each pool will feature a 6-game, double-elimination, round-robin tournament with the top two teams in each pool advancing to a similarly structured Round 2 format.

Brewers Sign Gagne | Nothing New From Crede, Cruz

Email Post Email Post

The Milwaukee Brewers just signed Eric Gagne to a minor league contract, officially ending all hope for Minnesota to acquire him. Gagne has performed rather poorly over the past few seasons, but the Brewers seem optimistic that he can return to form. Tom Haudricourt, who broke the story from the Journal Sentinel, suspects that the contract is loaded with incentives and that Gagne should be given the chance to compete for the team’s set-up job.

The Twins however seem to have set their sights on Juan Cruz. Cruz has played for the Cubs, Braves, A’s, and Diamondbacks and has had quite the up and down career, having twice exceeded the 6 ERA mark. However, Juan Cruz’s best year was arguably last season as he produced a 2.61 ERA over 57 games and would almost certainly be the Twins’ set-up man. This is speculation that LaVelle Neal cites, but nevertheless its good hot stove news and keeps the Twins faithful hopeful after a lackluster offseason.

No news out of the Joe Crede-front over the past 48 hours. Given the market, it seems imminent that he will sign a contract with Minnesota as heavy rumors have pointed in that direction last weekend. If healthy, Crede’s bat would vastly improve our lineup – but it’s quite the risk for him to stay healthy playing 81 games. But as for now, we haven’t heard much from the Crede-front since last week.

World Baseball Classic Betting – Americans are the favorites, but do they care?

———-

2009 World Baseball Classic Lines, Odds, Betting, When it comes to betting, there aren’t many factors more important than motivation. If one team is playing for their playoff lives and the other team has already sealed its fate, we all know who will bring the better effort.

Those same principles are present as we examine the World Baseball Classic odds as the American team is favored, but does it really care about winning?

There is supposed to be a lot of nationalism involved with the World Baseball Classic and you would figure that impacts the WBC lines, but it hasn’t so far.

When it comes to national pride, the United States cares far more about its Olympic basketball gold and even Olympic hockey than it does about baseball.

For starters, there just isn’t that feel of national pride. Nobody really talks about it, nobody really cares about it and nobody is interested in whatever the first place prize is.

More importantly, for WBC odds purposes, out of all of the teams, Team USA has the most to lose by trying too hard. The players for Team USA are all more focused on winning a World Series ring, or performing well in the Major Leagues so they can get paid, rather than over exerting themselves in an inconsequential tournament. MLB stars know that a long season awaits them and they can’t burn themselves out in the World Baseball Classic.

The all-around effort and intensity just isn’t there from an American standpoint and it was evident in the first iteration of the World Baseball Classic as the Americans were not a factor.

But the reason why they are a favorite for World Baseball Classic betting is because they are a brand name – the biggest. Some people might have to dig to find out who plays for the Panamanian team or the Puerto Rican team but, in general, fans trust that the Americans will field an All-Star team. But that type of ignorance can get you in some trouble.Daisuke Matsuzaka - World Baseball Classic 2009

When evaluating the World Baseball Classic odds, keep in mind that just because you don’t know a player, doesn’t mean that he’s not a good player. For example, Daisuke Matsuzaka dominated the WBC last time around but he didn’t join the Majors until later on. To the casual fan, Matsuzaka was just another no-name pitcher for the Japanese team but now he’s a household name.

The U.S. team does have good players but it don’t even have the best anymore. Teams like the Dominican Republic or Puerto Rico outclass them in talent, which compounds the problem.

So if you are planning on betting on Team USA, the favorite for the upcoming World Baseball Classic, just keep in mind that it might not have the best roster and they might not care so much about winning it. There’s better value with other teams.

What do you think?

Will Team USA win the 2009 World Baseball Classic?

LOTD: Former Hoosier Eric Gordon Making a Case for Rookie of the Year

Email Post Email Post

Eric Gordon Making Push for Rookie of the Year with ClippersIn what has been a well chronicled year of bad news for fans of Indiana basketball, as chronicled yesterday by FOMSF Josh Q. Public, Hoosier fans have had to search far and wide for good news and elusive silver linings.

Luckily, we have the rookie season of 2007-08 Big Ten Freshman of the Year Eric Gordon to provide a few smiles during perhaps the least competitive season of Indiana basketball in the Hoosiers’ rich and storied tradition.

Today’s Los Angeles Times features a very nice profile of Eric Gordon by Lisa Dillman. I have to admit that between managing this site and wallowing in the misery of the Hoosiers horrid 2008-09 season, I have not been staying as up-to-date on EJ’s exploits as I should be. But what a season he is having:

  • Eric Gordon averaged 21.9 points per game in January and was selected the Western Conference Rookie of the Month;
  • He is averaging 14.7 points per game for the season;
  • He scored 41 points, a Clippers rookie record, against Oklahoma City
  • He scored 19 points in the Rookie-Sophomore game during NBA All-Star weekend.

Here is a nice laudatory excerpt from the article:

LOTD:

Clippers’ Eric Gordon is no laughingstock — (LA Times)

Gordon averaged 21.9 points per game in January and was selected the Western Conference rookie of the month; he also became the Clippers’ go-to guy (admittedly, a small selection given the injuries to marquee players) and entered the conversation for NBA rookie of the year. If he was not on the same page as the likes of Chicago’s Derrick Rose and Memphis’ O.J. Mayo, then he at least appeared in the same chapter.

“Derrick’s got the ball in his hand the whole game,” said Neil Olshey, Clippers assistant general manager. “So does O.J. for the most part. Eric’s out there with All-Stars. He’s sharing the ball with Baron Davis, Zach [Randolph], Marcus Camby and Al Thornton.

“Were Eric getting the same number of attempts and touches in attack mode, as he did in January, for the rest of the year, then I think February, March and April would be up for grabs, believe me.”

Said Jordan: “He’s a monster.”

Well done Eric.  Here’s hoping you finish strong and earn the Rookie of the Year at the end of the season.  It is the only bit of good news IU fans can still hope for this season.

Breaking News: New White Sox Pitcher Bartolo Colon is Not a Model, Nor a Jockey

Email Post Email Post
bartolo-jockey_final

Chicago White Sox Manager Ozzie GuillenWelcome to your Chicago White Sox Spring Training update for February 17, 2009. I made my daily stop at ChiSox.com earlier this morning and was met with the always intriguing voice of manager Ozzie Guillen as the autoplay video started atop the sidebar. Guillen took some time yesterday to talk with reporters about the first workout of the White Sox Spring Traning in Glendale, Arizona.

As usual, Ozzie was his irreverent and comical self.

(Quick aside: I grew up with Bob Knight and obviously am a huge Ozzie Guillen fan. Has any other sports fan ever had the pleasure of following two funnier coaches than these two guys? Certainly there are few coaches who are looser cannons than these two. Either way, Knight and Guillen are endlessly interesting and always entertaining, both in good moods and in bad.)

You can view the video for yourself at ChiSox.com or at this link for when they move it off the homepage (I think — but you may have to install something from Microsoft, and as a newly reformed Mac user, I can absolutely not endorse installing anything from Microsoft; so do so at your own risk). Here is the exchange that particularly caught my ear:

Reporter: Is there anybody besides Colon and Conteras that are on a limited schedule?

Ozzie: We have a couple minor league kids. I don’t know their name – I never will. But no, everybody else is ready to go.

Reporter: Do you care about Colon’s weight, how big he is?

Ozzie: Colon was like 350 pounds when he won the Cy Young. I just worried about, you know what I mean – No. He’s not a model. When you’re a model you have to be –- he’s not a jockey, you know what I mean? Colon is like that, he’s always gonna be like that. It surprised me he showed up in better shape than what I thought. He’s in better shape than what I thought. Hopefully we get him ready to go, ready quick enough, and that’s another guy we got to put attention to.

Naturally, Ozzie’s hilarious line about Bartolo Colon not being jockey got me thinking about what it would be like if Bartolo Colon was a jockey. My first thought was: poor horse. My second thought was: this sounds like a job for Photoshop.

And here you go:

Bartolo Colon and Ozzie Guillen as jockeys

As expected, Bartolo’s horse looks like it’s about to buckle under the massive load it is carrying and fall over. And while it would be difficult to find a horse that could carry Bartolo’s tremendous weight, his ability to fire fastballs while riding, to injure the other horses, could help to subdue any down-the-stretch comebacks from competitors. My money’s on Ozzie in this one.

Anyway, now that we have that ridiculousness out of the way, some other interesting links for all of the White Sox fans out there (or for deathly scared fans of other AL Central teams who want to learn more about the 2008 and 2009 AL Central champs).

2009 NFL Scouting Combine Preview

Email Post Email Post

2009 NFL Scouting Combine Schedule-Players-Participants-NewsTomorrow, February 18th, the 2009 NFL Scouting Combine will begin with the arrival of the Group 1, 2, and 3 players in Indianapolis. It will kick off a Who’s Who of the NFL in which every big name you can think of will descend upon Indianapolis to scrutinize, pick apart, and drool over the very best that college football has to offer.

As we all know, the Scouting Combine can send even the most successful college players’ draft stock tumbling if they do not measure up, run slowly, or have a brain fart of the Wonderlic. Conversely, talented but inconsistent players can become top-5 picks by flashing incredible athleticism — game tapes be damned!

All in all, the NFL scouting combine is really a fascinating weekend for football junkies. The importance of having solid drafts to keep the foundation of an organization strong has been well documented. For teams like Detroit who have two first-round picks, this year’s Scouting Combine is especially important. But even teams like the Cowboys, who gave up their first round pick to trade for Roy Williams, will be in attendance trying to pick apart their potential second round choices.

Today, I am just going to provide you with as many Scouting Combine resources as I can find to get you through the week. Let’s start with the particulars:

Is Mark Buehrle Considering Retirement or St. Louis After 2011?

Email Post Email Post

Mark Buehrle May Be Considering Retirement After 2011 seasonI decided to jaunt on over to South Side Sox while taking a quick break at work a few minutes ago and saw something that compelled me to fire up the old blog engine and post. According to SSS (via Phil Rogers at the Chicago Tribune), White Sox ace Mark Buehrle, who is signed through the 2011 season, may be seriously considering retiring after his contract runs out.

Here is the link to the Phil Rogers article in the Tribune about Mark Buehrle considering retirement after 2011.

As stated in the article, Mark Buehrle, being the doting husband and father that he is, always comes to Spring Training homesick and missing his family. This very feeling could be what leads Buehrle, who has played with the White Sox his entire career, to hang up his spikes prematurely.

From the Rogers article:

“People may say I’m full of it,” said Buehrle, relaxing in front of his locker at the White Sox’s new Camelback Ranch. “I don’t know. Maybe I am. But as I look at it today, I don’t think you’re going to see me in a baseball uniform for too many more years. I miss my family too much when I’m away.”

“I’ve already done a lot of things in baseball, including winning a World Series,” Buehrle said. “I really don’t know if I’m going to have enough reasons to keep playing. I really don’t know if I’m going to want to play after this contract. Maybe I’ll just want a one-year deal.”

If you go to the South Side Sox post, it does not take too long into the comments section to find White Sox fans speculating that Mark Buehrle’s true desire could be to finish up his career in St. Louis, where he is from and where he makes his offseason home. There was a lot of speculation when the White Sox were negotiating with Buehrle on his current contract that he may not re-sign with Chicago because he wanted to go to St. Louis, who would not doubt welcome him with open arms and an open checkbook. But Mark Buehrle did re-up with the White Sox and helped lead the Good Guys to the playoffs last year, displaying the consistent efficiency that is his trademark.

There is no question that I never want to see Mark Buehrle leave Chicago and a long time awaits between now and then end of the 2011 season. Who knows what Mark Buehrle will be thinking about then. What we do know is that his longing to be closer to home is real, and that whether it leads him to retire or move to St. Louis after the expiration of his current contract, White Sox fans should probably at least prepare themselves for the possibility that these will be the last three years we get to enjoy Mark Buehrle on the South Side.

Mark Buehrle is 29 years old right now and will be 30 on opening day. He came up with the White Sox in 2000 and is probably the most defining player during a pretty successful decade in White Sox baseball that included the team’s first World Series in forever. Heading into 2009, Buehrle is 122-87 with a career ERA of 3.80 and a solid career WHIP of 1.27. Unquestionably, Mark Buehrle has been among the top 5 or 10 most consistent pitchers in Major League Baseball this decade, having never started fewer than 30 games since his first full season in 2001. He is one of the few pitchers toeing the rubber in the Majors today with a legitimate shot to get to 300 victories. He would obviously have to pitch into his 40s to do, but no one doubts that if he wanted to, with his rubber arm and sterling injury history, he very well could make a run at it.

I don’t ever want to consider the possibility of Mark Buehrle not being in the White Sox rotation or, even worse, pitching for someone else. It is rare that players stay with one team long enough for fans to develop a true, old-school attachment to them, but Mark Buehrle is one of those gMark Buehrle - Chicago White Sox - Signed Through 2011uys. In fact, just the other day on Valentine’s Day, my girlfriend gave me one of the coolest gifts ever: a framed authographed picture of Mark Buehrle after getting the final out of his no-hitter against Texas in 2007. It will be adorning the walls of my office as soon as I get the thing-a-ma-bob on the back of the frame to hang it.

But I will say this: if these are the last three seasons that Mark Buehrle pitches in Chicago, and he decides to either retire to for play for St. Louis after the 2011 season, I will not feel one shred of ill-will towards him. We all know that he grew up a Cardinals fan and that it has been dream to someday play there. And we know how important it is to him, as it is to all fathers, to be close to his wife and kids on a consistent basis. By 2011, Mark Buehrle will have given us a solid decade of dedication, loyalty, and excellence. What more could we reasonably ask of him?

In my idyllic view of the White Sox future, Mark Buehrle stays on the South Side his entire career, pitches into his 40s, leads us to another World Series, and makes a serious run at 300 victories. Just thinking about it gets me excited for this season and many more beyond. But the question is what is Mark Buehrle’s ideal vision of the future? At the end of the day, for all that he has given the White Sox and their fans, that is what I would most like to see happen — my own selfish desires be damned.

Either way, we know that we have at least three years left with Mark, and that the White Sox will attempt to defend their 2008 AL Central title with a very good team that is capable of doing so. One of the most important vetern leaders on said team is Mark Buehrle, the White Sox unquestioned ace of the 00s. Once I hit “publish” on this post, I’m just going to focus on cheering for Buehrle and the White Sox to finish out one of the best decades in franchise history in style.

We can worry about 2011 and beyond when it gets here.

LOTD: Shaq Dances with The Jabbawockeez, Then Shares All-Star MVP with Kobe

Email Post Email Post

Shaq Pre-Game All-Star Dance | Co-MVP with KobeWell, the 2009 NBA All-Star game was not the most exciting basketball game I’ve ever seen, but it did feature two images that we will see for weeks and months to come this season.

The Western Conference beat the Eastern Conference 146-119, and a most unlikely duo ended up sharing MVP honors: Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant. Kobe scored 27 points to lead all scorers and Shaq had 17 points in only 11 minutes. Reunited and playing for Lakers coach Phil Jackson, Shaq and Kobe teamed up for some key buckets early in the third quarter to push the West to an insurmountable lead.

The awarding of co-MVPs to Shaq and Kobe was clearly a PR move by the NBA to symbolically bury the hatchet between the two long-feuding stars. Shaq, of course, now says that it was all just a ruse they played on the media; and while that’s an entertaining story now, he isn’t fooling anyone. These two formed one of the most dominant duos in the history of the NBA and there is no telling how many more titles they could have won together. Only pretty significant personality disputes could break that kind of duo up — and it did.

Either way, now that they have officially been photographed accepting the MVP award together, the Shaq-Kobe feud is officially over. Halelujah.

Anyway, the other highlight from the 2009 NBA All-Star game was Shaquille O’Neal’s awesome pregame dance with The Jabbawockeez. Robert Littal over at Black Sports Online emailed me the video earlier tonight, and it is definitely worth sharing with you here:

LOTD: Shaq Gets His “Two Step” On With The Jabbawockeez..Classic Video

Also from BSO: Kobe, Lebron & Jay Z Together? Also Did I Mention Vanessa Bryant is FINE!!!

Leave it to Shaq to breathe some life and excitement into an otherwise pretty uneventful night. Now the next question is where will Amare Stoudemire be going…

Introducing Dayan Viciedo and the Cuban Trifectors – Three Keys for White Sox Success in 2009

Email Post Email Post
cuban-trifectors

Dayan Viciedo Bio - Cuban TrifectorsOne of the most intriguing names reporting to the White Sox Spring Training facility at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, Arizona is Dayan Viciedo. If you are just a general baseball fan, you may never have heard of Dayan Viciedo before. Even some White Sox fans might not be very familiar with the name yet.

But from what I am reading, we should all probably get very familiar with the name Dayan Viciedo; and if he is as good as advertised, the entire baseball world may be familiar with him soon.

The 19-year old Dayan Viciedo, a third baseman, is the latest Cuban defector to join the Chicago White Sox after signing a 4-year, $10 million deal this offseason. Jose Contreras, who came over earlier this decade from the New York Yankees, helped the White Sox win the 2005 World Series and has become a fixture in the White Sox rotation. Alexei Ramirez, dubbed “The Cuban Missile” by Ozzie Guillen during Spring Training last year, finished as the runner-up for the AL Rookie of the Year award in 2008.

Together, they form the trio of White Sox that I am now going to refer to as the Cuban Trifectors, and their play in 2009 will go a long way towards deciding whether or not the White Sox can repeat as AL Central champions.

Cuban Trifectors - Dayan Viciedo, Jose Contreras, Alexei Ramirez

So who is this Dayan Viciedo that, according to the Chicago Tribune, led one AL scout to say that “he has more hitting ability than Alexei”?

Dayan Viciedo, as mentioned, is a native Cuban who entered the National Series of Cuba at the ripe old age of 15. He only hit .243 that first season, but found his footing as a 16-year old and hit .337 with 14 home runs. And anyone who says, “well he was only playing in Cuba” obviously does not know much about international baseball.

Cuba always fielded a very competitive baseball team in the Olympics, and finished as the runner-up to Japan in the 2006 World Baseball Classic. Cuba is very serious about their baseball, and that same Chicago Tribune article cited earlier quotes an AL scout as saying “You don’t see a 16-year-old play on a national team [as he did].” Dayan Viciedo actually made the provisional 60-man roster for the World Baseball Classic but did not make the final cut.

Viciedo’s greatest strength appears to be significant raw power. I have read in more than one place that Viciedo projects to be a 35-40 home run guy. His .337 average as a 16-year old also shows that he is not a McGwire-esque one trick pony either. He will obviously have to prove, however, that he can make adjustments at the Major League level and provide consistent production against higher quality pitching.

The primary weakness that has been cited is Viciedo’s weight. He apparently ballooned up to 260 pounds at one point after reaching the U.S. following his defection. The White Sox instructed him to report to camp at 230 pounds, and he had already trimmed his weight to 246 pounds by the time of his tryout in November, according to the Chicago Tribune.

And Ozzie Guillen certainly seems encouraged, as this report at SunTimes.com from January 30, 2009 shows:

Guillen has gotten promising reports from bench coach Joey Cora regarding power-hitting third baseman Dayan Viciedo, 19, who defected from Cuba last year. There had been concerns that Viciedo’s weight would hurt his chances in the majors.

”I got great news about the former fat guy,” Guillen said with a laugh. ”Now he’s a big man. He’s a strong, big kid. When I saw him the first time, he was overweight, there’s no doubt.

”I talked to Joey Cora, and this kid is going to come to spring training having the big-league club on his mind, and that’s good. He says he wants to be on the big-league club. He is going to have all of the opportunities to make the ballclub.”

Viciedo will be competing with Josh Fields at 3B this spring. Joe Crede, the longtime fixture at the hot Dayan Viciedo Will Battle Josh Fields for 3Bcorner for the White Sox, will probably be in San Francisco or Minnesota. Juan Uribe will not be with team either. And while there is understandable excitement about Dayan Viciedo’s potential, it is important to point out that while Josh Fields struggled last year, this is still a guy who hit 23 home runs in only 373 ABs in 2007. He only had 20 ABs at the Major League level last year, but at 27 should be ready to hit his stride.

What will be interesting to see is whether the White Sox keep Viciedo at the big league level if he does not unseat Josh Fields as the starter, but shows enough pop in his bat to be a DH fill-in for Jim Thome and power bat off the bench. I would think that the White Sox want Viciedo playing every day, so if he is not starting on the big league club they will probably have him in AAA.

One thing is for sure: whether or not Viciedo breaks camp on the South Side, he could still play an integral role in the White Sox quest to defend their AL Central title. Alexei Ramirez played sparingly through the first few months of 2008, but came on strong during the final few months to become one of the offensive leaders for the White Sox. We will see how quickly Viciedo can adjust during Spring Training; but regardless, his name will be on all Sox fans minds all season, especially if Fields struggles or if the White Sox offense as a whole sputters like it did at the start of last season.

Either way, Dayan Viciedo is another solid building block for the future that Ken Williams has assembled. With respect to the immediate future, the other two members of the Cuban Trifectors are two of the most important keys for the White Sox success in 2009.

Jose Contreras is still recovering from the ruptured Achilles that ended his 2008 season. Most projections have him returning to the rotations around the All-Star break, and the early reports from Glendale are glowing:

Guillen presented rave reviews for Camelback Ranch, comments echoed by White Sox pitchers and catchers. He called Jose Contreras “the biggest surprise of camp,” even with just one day elapsed, as the right-hander showed up 30 pounds lighter than the end of the 2008 season and well on his way to coming back early from a ruptured left Achilles tendon suffered last August.

With the 4th and 5th slots in the rotation still up in the air, the healthy and effective return of Contreras could be a tremendous mid-season lift for the White Sox. Everyone hopes that Bartolo Colon and either Aaron Poreda or Clayton Richard can solidify the back end of the rotation, but there is no replacement for the big game experience that Jose Contreras possesses. He was up and down at times last season, but I firmly believe that the White Sox are a better team with him taking the bump every fifth day.

Alexei Ramirez Moving to Shortstop | Cuban TrifectorsThe other Cuban Trifector, Alexei Ramirez, is being counted upon heavily to not only deal with adjustments that AL pitchers will most likely throw his way during his second year in the big leagues, but also with playing a new position. Alexei is sliding over to SS from 2B to make way for Chris Getz (or perhaps Brett Lillibridge). Moving over to SS should not be too much of an adjustment for Alexei, as he played mostly shortstop and center field in Cuba. The move could certainly boost the White Sox offense, assuming that whoever is playing 2B can replace the modest production of Juan Uribe.

With inexperienced players like Jerry Owens, Getz, and Fields projected to be starters in 2009, and aging veterans like AJ Pierzynski, Jim Thome, Paul Konerko, and Jermaine Dye trying to prove that they can still produce at above-average levels, a lot of pressure will be on Alexei Ramirez and Carlos Quentin to provide consistent offensive production. Alexei, who will be 27 on opening day, was very consistent as a player in Cuba and is at the age where most players enter their prime years. For the White Sox to succeed in 2009, Alexei needs to build upon his solid rookie year and be the player throughout 2009 that he was during the final few months in 2008.

I am a huge proponent of Ken Williams’ willingness to bring in Cuban players, and the White Sox are in a unique situation to help Cuban players succeed. When Alexei joined the team last year, he had the veteran Contreras to lean on and fellow Latino Ozzie Guillen as his manager. Alexei was also 26, so he had seven years of maturity on the young Dayan Viciedo. But Viciedo will have both Contreras and Ramirez to help guide him, and a manager in Ozzie Guillen who has proven his willingness to give young players a chance.

Jose Contreras and Alexei Ramirez are both proven commodities who have experienced great success already at the Major League level. Dayan Viciedo is a raw 19-year old who possesses immense talent but still needs to prove that he has the skills and mental makeup to compete and produce consistently at the Major League level. Together, the Cuban Trifectors form a huge piece of the 2009 puzzle that the White Sox and their fans are hoping can result in another AL Central title and a return trip to the playoffs.

In the ultimate Big Man v Little Man battle on Saturday night, diminutive Nate Robinson defeated defending Slam Dunk champion Dwight Howard in the Sprite Slam Dunk Contest.

The winning dunk was pretty incredible. Check out the video of Nate Robinson jumping over Dwight Howard to take the 2009 Slam Dunk content title:

But Nate Robinson was far from the only player who came up with impressive dunks on Saturday night. Dwight Howard proved his freakishness yet again by pulling out a taller basket and making clever use of a phone booth as a prop. Here is the video:

Even Rudy Fernandez had a pretty sweet dunk in which Pau Gasol threw the ball off the back of the backboard and Fernandez grabbed it mid-air and dunked it. Here is the video of Rudy Fernandez’s dunk:

LeBron James Book “The Franchise” Outlines The King’s Meaning to City of Cleveland

LeBron James Book

New LeBron James Book - The FranchiseA few months back, when there seemed to be endless conversation about the possibility of LeBron James migrating to New York or New Jersey after next season, I wrote a post outlining why I think it is in LeBron’s best long-term interest to stay in Cleveland. Among the many reasons why I believe this to be true is the reality that LeBron James has the unique ability to single-handedly lift the spirits — emotionally and financially — of his quasi-hometown of Cleveland, which is just a stone’s throw away from Akron.

A book entitled The Franchise: LeBron James and the Remaking of the Cleveland Cavaliers, written by Terry Pluto and Brian Windhorst of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer, outlines exactly what LeBron James means to the Cleveland Cavaliers franchise, the city of Cleveland, and how important his long-term presence was, is, and will be moving forward for both.

The publishers of the book have been nice enough to send me a copy, which I cannot wait to tear into once it arrives. LeBron James is, in my estimation, the most compelling athlete in the world today. We have watched his every move on a national scale since he was a senior in high school. And he is one of the rare prep phenomens who has not only lived up to enourmous expectations, he has exceeded them.

The story of LeBron James’ basketball career, and its importance to the cities of Akron and Cleveland, is fascinating. Superstar athletes have always important to the people of the cities in which they play, but LeBron’s importance to Cleveland goes far beyond that; more than just being important, LeBron James has become almost essential to the fabric of a city that yearns like few others for a championship to lift up civic pride and spriit.

Just read the official description of The Franchise: LeBron James and the Remaking of the Cleveland Cavaliers:

When the Cleveland Cavaliers drew the top pick in the 2003 NBA draft, an entire city buzzed with excitement. After all, how often does a LeBron James come along? Especially for Cleveland, a midmarket Rust Belt city without a sports championship in forty years. Especially for the Cavaliers, a long-struggling team that had never reached the NBA finals.

Now, it seems everyone has something riding on LeBron—billionaire team owner Dan Gilbert looking for a return on his investment . . . teammates eager for a championship ring . . . the league in need of the next Michael Jordan to promote . . . the shoe company with its multimillion-dollar endorsement deal . . . even popcorn vendors in the stands of Quicken Loans Arena and servers waiting restaurant tables in a downtown that now booms every game night.

Award-winning sports journalists Terry Pluto and Brian Windhorst take an in-depth look at how a team and a city are being rebuilt around LeBron James. They tell the converging stories of a struggling franchise that had to get worse in order to get better and a highly touted teenage phenom, the local kid who became their future.

This book will fascinate any basketball fan who wants the inside story of how LeBron James became the young superstar shouldering the weight of an entire NBA franchise.

I’ll provide a review of the book once I receive my copy and read it, but I wanted to take a few minutes on a lazy, relaxing Sunday afternoon to do you and the book’s publisher a favor and tell you about it. For all LeBron James fans, Cleveland fans, and sports fans in general, the LeBron James bookThe Franchise: LeBron James and the Remaking of the Cleveland Cavaliers should be a worthwhile and compelling read.

Barry McBride - OBR - InterviewWelcome to the first installment of a new series here at Midwest Sports Fans called Behind the Keyboard.

The goal of this series is pretty simple: to learn more about the people behind the blogs that we all read every day. We are not necessarily looking for the featured blogger’s take on their particular sports or teams of interest, but rather to find out more about what makes them, and their blogs, tick on a daily basis.

The first keyboard that we are going to go behind is that of Barry McBride, who runs the Rumor Central portion of my personal favorite Cleveland Browns blog: the Orange and Brown Report. I am almost embarrased to say that I just found their site about midway through the 2008 season, but I immediately paid the nominal monthly fee to join and have access to the greatest insider info on the Browns available anywhere.

Barry was nice enough to fill out the Behind the Keyboard questionairre I sent him, and the results are as follows:

Quick Hits:

  • Name: Barry McBrideBarry McBride - Orange and Browns Report Interview
  • Current Blog: Orange and Brown Report: Rumor Central
  • Current Blog launch date: December 2008
  • Blogging Since: Before they called it blogging. 1996.
  • Other blogs contributed to: Greedwatch (1996-98), BrownsTNG (1999-2001), Bernie’s Insiders (2001-2005), OBR (2006-now). None of these sites ever fit neatly under the labels of of blog, fan site, community, news site, whatever. They’ve got elements of each. I like it that way.
  • Current Location: Suburbia
  • Hometown: I’ve lived in five different places in Ohio
  • Day job: Fox Sports Interactive / Scout.com
  • Favorite Team(s): Browns, Buckeyes
  • Favorite Athlete(s): Bernie Kosar, Phil Niekro

MSF: Why did you start blogging and what keeps you going every day?

Barry McBride: I really got involved in this back in 1995-96 when the Browns were ripped out of Cleveland. I ran a site called “Greedwatch” that was, for all intents and purposes, a blog about Modell and other NFL owners ripping off fans. The technology was different, but it was very blog-like in tone and use of links. The site quickly began just focusing on mocking the Ravens, which was a lot of fun back then. It matured into the OBR, which does a number of things, but includes three different blogging areas for our writers and Browns fans.

What keeps me going everyday is that I just love doing this. I get to talk football with Browns fans all day. I can’t imagine anything else I would rather be doing.

MSF: What has been your biggest challenge thus far?

Barry McBride: It’s all about time management. Juggling a sports site – particularly one that asks fans to support it financially – and another job is tough. You give up a lot of other things to do it, as any hard-core blogger will tell you.

MSF: Are there any athletes/celebrities that you have found yourself, for lack of a better term, obsessed with blogging about? (meaning that you always seem to post about even their most insignificant contributions to the daily sports media cycle). To what do you attribute this “obsession”?

Brian BillickBarry McBride: Back in 1999, I found myself doing multiple updates per day about the Browns’ attempt to sign LB Jamir Miller. It was sad, really… if I could track where Miller stopped for lunch I would do it. These days, anytime I have a chance to make fun of Brian Billick, I do it. It’s my civic duty.

MSF: If you had the opportunity to get one post you have already written in front of the eyes of every sports blog reader in the world, which one would it be and why?

Barry McBride: One entry that I’m particularly proud of is calling out the Browns for sniffing around defensive lineman Christian Peter back in the earlier days of the expansion franchise. I want to win as much as anyone, but after Browns fans watched Art Modell rip their team away, the last thing we needed was for the team that Paul Brown created to be rebuilt using players like this, an accused rapist whose actions sparked a movement. At some point, there are places you don’t want to go in order to try to win. The response we got to the article was incredible, and it was one of our first articles to get the attention of the mainstream press .

MSF: If you were told that you could bookmark five sports blogs other than your own and never visit any others, which five would you choose?

I subscribe to a large number of different blogs. I don’t want to insult any bloggers out there by not listing them, but I’m very fond of a number of Cleveland blogs such as Waiting For Next Year. And MSF, of course. Mark Leonard and Ace Davis on our own Munilot.com blogs are both very good. The blogs I like the best are ones that have a clear point of view, highlight stories that otherwise wouldn’t get much press, and remain staunchly independent.

MSF: What is one prediction that you went on record about that you are the most proud of?

Barry McBride: About halfway through 2007, I told listeners on our radio program that “Derek Anderson’s value is as high as it will ever be”. I was one of the last DA skeptics left after the strong start in Derek Anderson - Browns2007, and pat myself on the back for trusting my own eyes about what I saw in camp that summer. I’m proud of that one. Usually I defer to the other writers on our site, but every once in a while, I get something right.

MSF: Are there any on-record predictions that give you great shame just thinking about?

Barry McBride: I predicted the Browns would finish 9-7 last year. Oops.

(Editor’s note: 9-7 was our official prediction for the Browns last season too. I guess we all missed that one pretty badly.)

MSF: Are there any posts you have published and thought later, “why the hell did I post that?” Did you keep it live?

Barry McBride: I got furious about the Indians dumping CC Sabathia last year and ripped on Dolan pretty hard-core. I still think Dolan’s kind of a worthless lump and have a real negative view of some of his business ventures, but went overboard. I realized that I should probably STFU about sports other than the Browns and the NFL, because I don’t know the details as well as I do on my own turf. I wound up pulling them down.

MSF: Bob Knight once said that coaching, for him, was an endless pursuit of the perfectly played game. From a blogging standpoint, how would you define the perfect blog post?

Barry McBride: It’s one that reaches beyond the web browser and changes things in a positive way for fans.

MSF: If you could publicly ask yourself any question, what would it be and how would you answer it?

Barry McBride: Question: What do you think people want to know about you?

Answer: Squat. Fans come to the OBR because of the Browns and their love of sports and the city, and the information and analysis we can give them. Keeping your own ego in check should be Rule 1 for every blogger, particularly a sports blogger.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: if you’re a serious Browns fan, you shouldn’t even think twice about paying for the premium OBR package. In addition to their tremendous in-season coverage, they do a great job of covering the Browns’ offseason maneuvering and draft preparation. (And no, the OBR in no way compensates me for these recommendations. But I love their site, and Barry was nice enough to be first Behind the Keyword guinea pig, so I’ll pimp their great site as much as possible to anyone reading this.)

The Rumor Central portion of the OBR, which Barry McBride manages, does not require any fees. Here are some links to the most recent Rumor Central posts:

Illinois Beats Indiana Led By the Best Performance Ever in Assembly Hall By Someone Named Mike Davis

Email Post Email Post

Mike Davis, Illinois Defeat Indiana | Box ScoreIndiana and Illinois have played four halves of basketball and 80 minutes total this season. For the first three halves and 60 minutes, there was no question which team was better. Illinois dominated Indiana to the tune of a 114-66 advantage, which included a 22-1 lead to start the team’s first meeting in Champaign.

In the second half of today’s rematch in Bloomington, however, the Hoosiers perhaps offered a sign of what is to come in the near future: real competitiveness against a top-20 team.

Despite being down 38-21 at halftime, and continuing to play without suspended leading scorer Devan Dumes, Indiana played hard and played well in the second half. On a couple of occasions the Hoosiers got the Illini lead down to 8 or 9 points, but were never able to take the next step and erase the rest of Illinois’ advantage.

(Follow the link to view the Indiana-lllinois box score)

For the Illini, the game was won inside. Indiana actually held Demetri McCamey to only two points, but Mike Davis and Mike Tisdale combined for 32 points, 16 rebounds, and 6 blocked shots. Davis in particular was impressive with his poise and athleticism, and turned in what IU fans will no doubt agree was the best performance ever at Assembly Hall by someone named Mike Davis.

No offense intended for IU’s former coach of the same name, but it what it is.

While another home loss is hard to take, and Indiana never truly threatened to win this game, the team’s fight and defense in the second half was encouraging. Matt Roth and Malik Story played especially well in the second half, doing everything they could to compensate for the offensive void that Devan Dumes’ absence has left. Story finished with 9 points and was assertive in taking the ball strong to the hole. Roth finished with 13 points and put some juice into IU’s comeback attemptMalik Story - Indiana Loses to Illinois | Box Score by nailing three second half 3-pointers.

At the end of the day, the same problems plagued Indiana today that have plagued the team all year: overall lack of talent and depth and an inability to make free throws. The Hoosiers shot 24 free throws but made only 11. In a 13-point loss, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out how much different the game could have been if the Hoosiers had made their free ones.

In a season of moral victories, the second half of today’s game was another one. It continues to be imperative for IU fans to maintain realistic expectations of this year’s undermanned team. We all want victories, but this is another building block game that helped us to build the foundation for many more victories in the future.

Or at least we hope.

That said, it always sucks to lose by 13 at home, especially to Illinois. Another reward like we got a few weeks back against Iowa sure would be nice before this season is over. Maybe once Devan Dumes is back we can get one.
