Look, I’m sure that Jon Gruden can be a jerk, and he probably was not totally forthright with his intentions all the time — but head coaches are in a tough spot when it comes to aging, fading superstars. Remember what happened with the Patriots and Lawyer Milloy back in the day? The salary cap makes it hard to pay guys for what they’ve done; you have to put guy for what they are doing and will do. San Diego is struggling to figure out how to handle the LT situation right now, which is very related.

At the end of the day, it sounds like Simeon Rice has more of a problem with the way things were handled, and a perceived lack of honesty on Jon Gruden’s part. I have no problem with that. But Gruden’s (and Bruce Allen’s) history of parting ways with older players is not something I will look down on him for.

Oh no! What a scumbag for cutting pricey, beat-up players! There’s a reason Keenan McCardell, Simeon Rice, BJ, Keyshawn, and Simms have not played or been productive since their Bucs release. (Maybe you can make a case for Keyshawn.)

Football is not private charity or a cushy government job. There’s no job security, Simeon. Wake up, buddy.
