Peyton Manning Wins NFL MVP Award

Update January 10th, 2010: Please note that this post was originally published on January 2nd of 2009. It has come to my attention that many people are getting to this post through Google looking for information on this year’s MVP award.

A major reason for the misunderstanding is that Peyton Manning has won the MVP award…again!

My apologies to those of you who thought that the information below was applicable to this year. It is not. This link will take you to the MVP voting results for 2010.

Update: It has been amusing to me how many people are coming to this post thinking that it’s current. I was waiting to see how long it would take a commenter to actually call people out…and finally one did.

Anyway, I just posted my top 5 list for the 2009 NFL MVP award, so feel free to go there, cast your vote, and continue the debate about this year’s award.

——————–

Peyton Manning Wins NFL MVP AwardPeyton Manning has been rewarded for leading the Indianapolis Colts to nine straight wins and a playoff berth after overcoming an early season knee injury, and the ensuing offensive struggles and injury woes experienced by the Colts this season.

Today, it was announced by The Associated Press that Peyton Manning won his third NFL MVP award, tying Brett Favre as the only three-time winners in NFL history.

And the voting was not even close.

The AP MVP voting is done by a nationwide ballot of 50 NFL sportswriters and broadcasters. Peyton Manning received 32 votes, which placed him miles ahead of runners-up Chad Pennington and Michael Turner, who each garnered 4 votes. Adrian Peterson and Steelers linebacker James Harrison each received three votes. Philip Rivers garnered two votes, while Titans rookie Chris Johnson and Arizona QB Kurt Warner each got one vote a piece.

According to the story at ESPN.com:

“It’s been the most rewarding regular season that I’ve been a part of in my 11 years, and I have to believe a lot of the other players and even coaches might feel the same way.”

Peyton Manning also won the MVP award in 2004 and in 2003, the year the was named co-MVP with Steve McNair.

For the season, Manning eclipsed 4,000 yards for the ninth time to go with a 27-12 TD:INT ratio and a 95.0 passer rating. During the team’s nine-game winning streak, after it fell to 3-4, Manning has been even better. He is 209-290 with 2,248 yards and a 17:3 TD:INT ratio.

Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts travel to San Diego on Saturday night for their wild-card weekend matchup with the San Diego Chargers. The two teams know each other well, and have a history of meeting for epic clashes in the playoffs. Sunday should be no different.

Congratulations to Peyton Manning. I did not throw in my two cents before the results were announced, but I most certainly would have given my MVP award to Manning. He put the Colts on his shoulders this season after overcoming quite a troubling preseason injury. Good for Peyton, and best of luck to the Colts this weekend.

Way to go Peyton, you totally deserve it.

  • http://news.review-of.com/ News Review

He deserves the award.. Landslide winner? No DOUBT.. Go Manning!! Go Colts!!

  • pioneer

It’s obviously a vote due to popularity! I don’t think he deserved it one bit. Of course I’m right b/c i just watched the game and Mr. Mvp is going home now!

  • http://www.midwestsportsfans.com JRod

    @pioneer, thanks for the comment.

However, I think it is a somewhat myopic view to look at one playoff game and cite it as proof that Peyton Manning did not deserve the MVP award. The MVP is a regular season award, which is why it is announced before the playoffs — which is what the MLB should do. There were good arguments to be made for other players, but I don’t think any of them stacked up to Peyton Manning this year. He was an MVP in both the “outstanding player” sense and the “valuable to his team” sense.

Early playoff exit or not, this team was 3-4 and would not have been anywhere close to the playoffs without Peyton Manning’s superb play over the final two months of the season. He was and is a very deserving MVP in 2008.

  • ELonda

Peyton you are the best and you deserve this award

  • Rich

NO kidding! I hate Favre, However that dosen't mean he doesn't deserve to be the MVP. Look what he has done to Vikings. He is truly the best player and Manning is second for sure.

  • Rich

I totally agree! Favre actully deserves to be MVP

  • b pearson

WAY BETTER THAN THEN THE SENILE FARVE, WITH A VERY WEAK SCHEDULE , ONLY 2 TEAMS OVER 500, C MON MAN… PAYTON ALL THE WAY

  • julious

The colts have the easiest schedule in the NFL and its Peyton not Payton. Use your brain before you just throw out stupid comments for everyone to laugh at you.

  • MBOWMAn

Umm no Favre is definetly the better quarterback. and sorry to say your colts are gunna get kicked out of the playoffs real fast they arnt that good. talk about a easy schedule. they almost lose to shitty teams. peyton is turning into a interception machine while on the other hand favre is not. so look up your stats before you come out and make stupid comments.

  • weedtard

how arnt the colts good there the only undeafed team as of now…yea bret has more wins and more number's only cuz he has played twice as long obviously dude

  • donnabelle

It's obvious, Peyton should be the mvp this season. he deserves it!

  • kelen

Mannint led an already great team experienced team to victory, Favre took a .500 team and turned them into a super bowl contender in his first year with the team. His TD to INT ratio is better than Mannings also. Favre had the harder job and will finish just as good as Manning if not better.

  • jackson

lets toss a vote aaron rodgers. he led a 4 and 4 team to the playoffs. he also doesnt have a line like favre a manning that it takes 7 + players to get to him. aaron is the true mvp

  • Jeff43

It should have been Favre. I guess he'll just have to live with just getting another Super Bowl trophy.

  • Anonymouse

    U f'n IDOITS!
This article is a YEAR OLD, it's LAST YEAR'S MVP ballot results.
Chris Johnson was a rookie LAST YEAR.
Try reading the article ya clowns.

  • brendo

i was just about to say this

  • Adam

Completely absurd. Brees, Rivers, and Favre were much more valuable.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/JerodMSF JerodMSF

Thank you for finally saying what someone needed to say.

  • JOE

TRUE MVP……………????? EVERYONE MAKES THE EXCUSE THAT RODGERS HAD NO LINE. DID U WATCH THE GAMES. THE GUY HOLDS ON TO THE BALL WAY TO LONG. HALF THOSE SACKS WERE HIS OWN FAULT. OR JUST PLAYING A BEAST LIKE JARED ALLEN. AND COME THE SECOND ROUND OF THE PLAYOFFS ALLEN WILL LIGHT HIM UP AGAIN, AND FAVRE AND THE VIKINGS WILL BE HOSTING THE COWBOYS AT HOME.

  • stupid fav ray

    sorry favre

  • rivers in the sb

jackson, your retarded…. rivers manning brees even farve are better than rodgers

  • phillip

dude if you acually believe that you should do you're homework. brees, manning and farve have options to throw to then rodgers and 2 of those teams arent really looking that good. I personally dont like rivers because I'm a chiefs fan but he is a great QB but the chargers have a great oline while rodgers has barley any protection. So while all those people you said are great QB's they also have more offensive weapons and better protection.

  • joe basher

Almost every great QB holds onto the ball to long dumbass. you cant just throw the ball after 3 secs if no ones open everytime. and if you want to count a MVP you have to look at statistics and if that player wasnt on that team would they be in the same situation. Well the vikes made it to the playoffs last year without farve so its true to say he didnt help them AS much as people say. (I will take that back if they win the superbowl) Manning has won MVP's when he wasnt really the MVP that year. For instance last year. And why does it have to be a QB in the first place or a person on a great team why not Chris Johnson?

  • Packersfan218512

I am a packers fan, obviously, but I think Favre deserved MVP, believe me, I love rodgers, but I just think Favre has done a tiny bit more this season, I am just hopin for 2 things now, # 21 DEFENSIVE MVP OF 2009! and a GREEN BAY PACKERS vs SAN DIEGO CHARGERS superbowl. Green bay wins 24 – 20

  • tony

Favre's not even the Vikings MVP.

He was successful because defenses put 8 in the box, to stop Peterson.

  • Justin

Rivers should have got some more votes. The west coast is overlooked every year. Manning is good but Favre or Rivers should have come closer. That is alright cause Rivers will have a Super Bowl Championship this year. Favre will come back next year.after losing the Super Bowl. Chargers VS Vikings. 34-28 San Diego Super Chargers Win. Go Chargers!!!!!!!!!

  • andrew

That is BS Chris Johnson did get one vote!! There have only been 6 men in the NFL to rush for over 2,000 yards and he broke other records this season. That is so dumb to give Manning this award!! Fine give it to the NFL golden boy but it should have been split like it was with Mcnair and Manning. CJ was robbed!!
