2008 NFL All-Pro Team Announced – No Ken Dorsey?

Email Post Email Post

2008 NFL All-Pro Team Announced | All Pro Roster | All Pro VotingThe 2008 AP NFL All-Pro team was announced earlier today, and it includes a lot of newcomers. The team is selected by the vote of 50 nationwide sportswriters and broadcasters who cover the NFL.

There was only one unanimous selection on this year’s team: Ravens safety Ed Reed. The safety position seemed to be the easiest for voters to choose, as Troy Polamalu received 46 of the possible 50 votes for the other safety slot.

The most competitive single position was defensive end, where Justin Tuck and Jared Allen received 26 and 21 votes, respectively, following by Julius Peppers (20 votes) and John Abraham (17 votes). Inside linebacker was also very competitive, as Jon Beason eeked out the second slot over Patrick Willis 18-17.

Here is the 2008 NFL All-Pro Team:

2008 NFL All-Pro Offense

QB – Peyton Manning, Indianapolis Colts (28 votes)

RB – Adrian Peterson, Minnesota Vikings (45 votes)

RB – Michael Turner, Atlanta Falcons (40 votes)

FB – Le’Ron McClain, Baltimore Ravens (38 votes)

WR – Andre Johnson, Houston Texans (45 votes)

WR – Larry Fitzgerald, Arizona Cardinals (21 votes)

TE – Tony Gonzalez, Kansas City Chiefs (33 votes)

T – Jordan Gross, Carolina Panthers (34 votes)

T – Michael Roos, Tennessee Titans (32 votes)

G – Steve Hutchinson, Minnesota Vikings (40 votes)

G – Chris Snee, New York Giants (32 votes)

C – Kevin Mawae, New York Jets (25 votes)

K – Stephen Gostowski, New England Patriots (28 votes)

KR – Leon Washington, New York Jets (19)

2008 NFL All-Pro Defense

DE – Justin Tuck, New York Giants (26 votes)

DE – Jared Allen, Minnesota Vikings (21 votes)

DT – Albert Haynesworth, Tennessee Titans (49 votes)

DT – Kevin Williams, Minnesota Vikings (25 votes)

OLB – DeMarcus Ware, Dallas Cowboys (45 votes)

OLB – James Harrison, Pittsburgh Steelers (38 votes)

ILB – Ray Lewis, Baltimore Ravens (39 votes)

ILB – Jon Beason, Carolina Panthers (18 votes)

CB – Nnamdi Asomugha, Oakland Raiders (32 votes)

CB – Cortland Finnegan, Tennessee Titans (31 votes)

S – Ed Reed, Baltimore Ravens (50 votes)

S – Troy Polamalu, Pittsburgh Steelers (46 votes)

P – Shane Lechler, Oakland Raiders (25 votes)

Follow the link to see a complete break down of the voting for the 2008 NFL All-Pro team.

Cortland Finnegan, Nnamdi Asomugha, James Harrison, Justin Tuck, and Jon Beason were all first time selections on the All Pro defense. On offense, Michael Turner, Adrian Peterson, Le’Ron McClain, Larry Fitzgerald, Andre Johnson, Michael Roos, Jordan Gross, Chris Snee, Stephen Gostowski, and Leon Washington were all first time All Pros.

I would personally like to know how someone left Albert Haynesworth off of their ballot. But all in all, I can’t argue too much with the selections.

I guess Ken Dorsey didn’t play well enough for the Browns to merit even one vote. Joe Thomas, Phil Dawson, and Josh Cribbs were only the Browns who merited any votes. Cribbs led the way with four.

Oh well, there’s always next year.

Beanie Wells Is Going Pro

Email Post Email Post

Beanie Wells Is Going Pro - Declares for NFL DraftIt was reported last night that Ohio State RB Beanie Wells has decided to skip his senior season to go pro and will enter the NFL draft.

Wells will leave Ohio State as the school’s fourth all-time leading rusher with 3,382 yards. He is behind Buckeye legends Archie Griffin, Eddie George, and Tim Spencer. Beanie Wells came into the 2008 season as a leading candidate for the Heisman Trophy, but was slowed by injuries early in the year. He rebounded to run very well down the stretch, and played terrifically in the Buckeyes’ Fiesta Bowl loss to Texas.

Last week, it appeared that Wells might return to Ohio State, as he cited a feeling of unfinished business. However, it appears that the advice of Jim Tressel, and rational thought, prevailed. Running backs, more than any other position, have a very short shelf-life in the NFL. Beanie Wells will go high in the draft and saves himself a year of wear and tear by leaving now.

I don’t think anyone can argue that he is making the best possible decision for himself. And kudos to Jim Tressel for leading him in that direction.

The following is the statement released by Beanie Wells:

“I want to thank my teammates, my coaches, my teachers and the academic advisors for all they have done, and I definitely want to thank the Buckeye fans for all their support,” Wells said in a statement. “Ohio State has become like a family to me, and it will always be that way. But in the best interest of my family, it’s time to move on and take a chance at fulfilling my lifetime dream of playing in the NFL.”

Gotta get to work this morning, so I can’t expound too much, but needless to say Browns fans everywhere will start clamoring for the Cleveland and new coach Eric Mangini to select the Ohio native and Buckeye star. Would that be a good choice for the Browns? It will no doubt be a hotly debated topic over the next few weeks.

NFL Playoffs: Ravens-Titans Divisional Round Preview and Prediction

Email Post Email Post
tennessee-titans-logo

Titans-Ravens Preview, Prediction, TV, Announcers, Point SpreadsSadly, there are no true Midwest teams left in the NFL playoffs. The Colts were our last great hope, but their season fizzled in overtime against the Chargers. I’m not a Colts fan by any means, but at least covering their playoff run would have given us something to do here at Midwest Sports Fans.

As it is, we will have to adopt a team that is kind of in the Midwest…but not really: The Tennessee Titans.

As everyone knows, the Titans used the mustache voodoo of Jeff Fisher to jump out to a great start this season before falling back to the pack a bit. Led by a great game with rookie RB Chris Johnson and LenDale White, efficient QB play by Kerry Collins, and one of the most dominant defensive lines in the NFL, the Titans were able to secure the #1 seed in the AFC Playoffs.

And their reward?

The Baltimore Ravens, whose defense and running game are absolutely hitting on all cylinders right now. The Ravens and Titans will duke it out this weekend for the chance to go to the AFC Championship game, in what should be a physical, smash-mouth type of game that may make you sore just watching it from your couch.

Here are the particulars of the game, including TV schedule, announcer lineup, and point spreads. (As usual, point spread and over-under odds sponsored by the NFL Football Handicapping experts at DocSports.)

Baltimore Ravens at Tennessee Titans

  • Saturday, January 10, 2009
  • TV Schedule: 4:30 ET on CBS
  • Announcer lineup: Greg Gumbel and Dan Dierdorf
  • Point Spread: Tennessee Titans -3
  • Over-Under: 34 1/2

Injury News: Haynesworth practices, but Ed Reed, Todd Heap, and Derrick Mason do not — (Pro Football Talk)

I am really excited for this game. While I hate the Ravens, of course, there is no denying that the star power and play-making ability of their defense makes them an intriguing team to watch. What has been surprising about Baltimore this season has been the proficiency of their offense.

I think people are going a little too overboard in their praise of Joe Flacco — he is managing games and not making critical mistakes, but is by no means winning games — but the consistency of their run game has been deadly in recent weeks. Le’Ron McClain and Willis McGahee have used huge 4th quarter bursts to salt games away against Dallas and Miami, and it will be imperative that Tennessee stop these two guys in the second half and give Kerry Collins and the offense a chance to win the game.

I do think that Tennessee will somewhat put the clamps on Baltimore’s run game, but they won’t stop it completely. And I’m not sure I totally trust Joe Flacco to stay out of trouble against a physical, ball-hawking D.

However, I just can’t pick against the Ravens D. Ed Reed is a one man wrecking crew in the secondary, Ray Lewis has been playing great, and Terrell Suggs has been a monster rushing the passer. Tennessee has a right to demand respect for their defense, but they don’t have the proven big-game playmakers that the Ravens do. If Chris Johnson can break some runs, and Kerry Collins can hit some passes downfield, Tennessee has a chance.

But I think Baltimore is coming out ahead in this one, and moving on to face Pittsburgh in the AFC Championship game.

And if that happens, at least the Browns can take some pride that they played in the division with the two best teams in the AFC. Unfortunately, they just couldn’t compete with them. This weekend will be another reminder of why.

Archie Manning Says Peyton Thinks Tony Dungy Will be Back in 2009

Email Post Email Post

Archie Manning Says Tony Dungy is Leaning Towards Returning to Colts in 2009Interesting tidbit I just caught on SI.com.

Archie Manning, father of MVP Colts QB Peyton Manning, appeared as a guest on Dan Patrick’s show today and among the topics discussed was the future of Colts head coach Tony Dungy.

Rumors have been swirling ever since the Colts were eliminated from the playoffs that Tony Dungy is leading towards retiring. Similar rumors have swirled for the past few offseasons, but Dungy has obviously come back each time. The Colts have many questions heading into the 2009 season, and none is more important than who is manning the head coach position. (Nice pun, huh?)

Here is the blurb from SI.com:

Archie said that Peyton told him that he thinks coach Tony Dungy is coming back. Both Dan and Archie are slightly surprised, because they thought Dungy was leaning toward retirement.

I think probably everybody is surprised at that comment from Archie Manning, because pretty much everyone has been under the impression that the retirement of Tony Dungy was a foregone conclusion. Who knows how credible this information truly is, because only Tony Dungy really knows, but it is certainly a positive sign for Colts fans. The vast majority of Colts fans seem to want Tony Dungy back, unlike their clueless columnist at the Indianapolis Star, Bob Kravitz, who foolishly thinks that it is time for Tony Dungy to go.

The Tony Dungy retirement watch continues, but chalk up a tally on the “He’s staying” side with the comments of Archie Manning. Colts fans can only hope more tallies are to come — and that Dungy ultimately is back on the Colts’ sideline next season.

Eric Mangini Introduced, with His Wife, as Browns Head Coach at Press Conference

Email Post Email Post

Eric Mangini held his first press conference this morning as the new head coach of the Cleveland Browns.

“I know the Cleveland fans,” Mangini declared. “The Cleveland fans do not just love football. They live football.”

He gets it. And he might have been speaking about himself.

Mangini, who worked as a ball boy under Cleveland coach Bill Belichick in the early 1990′s, was introduced by Browns President Mike Keenan who said in a written statement: “We selected the person we thought to be the most driven, passionate and most qualified … Eric Mangini understands how much we want this team to win.

Do you think Eric Mangini is a good hire for the Cleveland Browns?

“With that, it is my great pleasure to welcome Eric, his wife, Julie, and his children back to Cleveland,” Kennan said.

(Picture below courtesy of John Kuntz / Plain-Dealer)

Eric Mangini Introduced as Browns Head Coach at Press Conference Conspiculously absent from the scene was Browns owner Randy Lerner, who has refused to speak before modern media technology such as television cameras, tape recorders, and laptops. Lerner, however, is okay with pen and paper and shorthand.

However, Lerner may be available for a closed meeting with select reporters, later today.

Speaking in a stilting manner, but with confidence and fire in his eyes, Mangini, who turns 38 at the end of the month, said he wants his players to be intelligent, hard-working, very competitive and very passionate about the game of football.

Mangini ducked the quarterback question, stating he needed time to access not only each quarterback’s game, but his presence in huddle and his intelligence. He said he would speak personally to both Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson, before naming a starter.

Although Brady Quinn was named the starter for 2009 by former Head Coach Romeo Crennel, that is not a given under Mangini. However, local sports analysts have said Anderson had his chance this year and failed miserably — and that he should be used as trade bait.

Again, Mangini wasn’t talking about any of that.

He did, however, commit to sticking with the Browns 3-4 defensive scheme, but did leave room for a bit of flexibility. Critics have complained the 2008 Browns did not have the personnel for a 3-4 defense, believing a 4-3 would have resulting in more blitzing opposing quarterback schemes — resulting in fewer opponents points.

Eric Mangini, who has been compared to his mentor, Bill Belichick, in being a man of few words and saying nothing when talking to the media, showed that side of his personality. Although his answers were somewhat wordy, he really didn’t get into specifics.

He used a broad brush in answering media questions, refusing to be baited into saying anything remotely negative about the Jets organization or his former quarterback, Brett Favre.

Mangini also deflected a question from Terry Pluto of The Plain Dealer as to specifically what three things Mangini would do to turn the Browns around.

“I’ve only been here for 12 hours,” Mangini said.

Mangini said his vision is to instill “a truth in sports”. He does not just want talented players, but talented, hard-working and disciplined players.

This could be a major reason Lerner chose Mangini. Romeo Crennel was rumored to have run a country club atmosphere with hugs and no hitting during practice. This led to the Browns being woefully unprepared when the exhibition season began in which Cleveland went 0-4.

This lack of intensity — and more than a few injuries — carried onto the regular season evidenced by having to call unnecessary time-outs and dropped footballs when players were not on the same page. The Browns were also tagged on mickey-mouse penalties for being offsides and having too many players on the field.

Eric Mangini will not tolerate any lackluster play, and will decide which players will play and which will go after doing his own assessment and evaluation, he said.

Mangini said he learned a lot from his first head coaching job with the Jets from 2006 until the end of the 2008 season.

There were so many firsts in his first year with the Jets, from practice rosters, to hiring assistants and sports psychologists. (This writer has believed the Browns have needed a shrink in the locker room for several years.)

First, the Browns had to hire a general manager. Although Eric Mangini will be there for the G.M. interviews, he is less interested in who will be assigned specific duties — the general manager or head coach — than in reaching mutual decisions and being on the same page.

It is clear that Mangini — not the general manager — will be the new face of the Browns. Cleveland’s new Browns culture will be determined and shaped by Mangini.

The Browns are leaning in the direction of hiring George Kokinis, who works in player personnel under Ozzie Newsome, general manager of the Baltimore Ravens. The Browns will not be able to speak with Kokinis under after the Ravens are eliminated. (This writer hopes that will happen on Saturday when Baltimore plays Tennessee.)

The only problem with the Mangini press conference was in many of the stupid questions asked about Mangini’s relationship with the Jets; why he was fired, if he has a chip on his shoulder, questions all asked to get some kind of rise out of Mangini.

With competing television, radio and newspaper reporters — and personalities — together in one room at the press conference, the air was charged with testosterone — even among the females.

Mangini has his work cut out for him in Cleveland. But at least he is not a virgin. He has his first coaching job under his belt and has faced off the New York media.

The last time the Browns hired a coach with NFL experience was Nick Skorich in 1971.

But Mangini with the struggling, fragmented and injured Browns team, has his work cut out for him.

Is he up to it? I am as optimistic as a Cleveland fan could be.

I can’t wait until August.

Go Browns!

BCS Championship Game Preview and Prediction, and a Tip for Mack Brown and Pete Carroll

Email Post Email Post

BCS Florida-Oklahoma Preview and PredictionTonight, the Florida Gators and Oklahoma Sooners will take to field to determine college football’s “national champion”. I put that in quotes, of course, because there has been a strong uprising of support over the past week for the national championship candidacy of Utah, the nation’s only undefeated team.

My take on that is that I think both Florida and Oklahoma would defeat Utah if they played — but why in the hell aren’t they? I also thought that Alabama would beat Utah, and we saw how that turned out. To have two one-loss teams playing in the BCS championship game to determine the “national champion”, while the only undefeated team in college football is left on the sidelines with no chance at a title, well it stinks.

And while I don’t begrudge any coach for stating the case for his team, I think Pete Carroll and Mack Brown should shut up about their own teams’ national championship arguments and get behind Utah. Both USC and Texas have lost; Utah has not. A much more compelling case for a playoff can be made by arguing the case of Utah. If coaches with the stature of Pete Carroll and Mack Brown got behind the Utes’ cause and helped to fan the flames of outrage, perhaps mountains could be moved a few more inches closer to a playoff.

Our friends over at Flash Sports Tonight do a nice job of ripping Pete Carroll and Mack Brown a new one in the newest FST Flash Report:

(And if for some reason the video isn’t displaying, head on over to Flash Sports Tonight and watch it there.)

Unfortunately, the plight of Utah is simply indicative of the greed and myopic thinking that defines college football. And until the conference commissioners and school presidents start thinking more with their heads and their hearts than with their wallets, it will always be that way.

Anyway, enough soapbox stuff. It is not the fault of Florida and Oklahoma that whichever team wins this game will have to deal with a certain amount of taint on their trophy. And it certainly does not mean that the two best teams in America are not, in fact, playing tonight. It is hard to argue with either Florida or Oklahoma as worthy national championship contenders. As we preview tonight’s game, I’ll be giving you lots of links to get you ready for tonight.

First, let’s get the particulars out of the way. Here is the pertinent time, place, lines, and announcer information you need to know:

BCS National Championship Game: Florida Gators v Oklahoma Sooners

  • When: Today, January 8th, 2009
  • Where: Miami, FL
  • TV Schedule: 8:00 ET on FOX
  • Announcer Pairing: Thom Brennaman and Charles Davis
  • Point Spread: Florida Gators -5
  • Over-Under: 69 1/2

(Point spreads and over-unders provided by the College Football Handicapping experts at DocSports.)

The next link comes from ESPN, where they have put together an informative “Tale of the Tape” comparison between Florida and Oklahoma:

BCS Championship Game Tale of the Tape – (ESPN)

SI.com has some nice stories previewing a few of the key positions for each team:

Florida finally has a good ground game – (Stewart Mandel)

Oklahoma’s O-Line is pretty damn good – (Andy Staples)

Brandon Spikes may want to stop talking trash about Big 12 defenses until after the game – (Stewart Mandel)

Well, it took me a little longer to get this post together than I’d anticipated and I’m about to be late for a work meeting. So I’ll give my prediction real quick before getting out of here.

I am rooting for Oklahoma to win tonight, but I think Florida will get it done. I think there is some truth to the notion that Big 12 defenses have not been that good, and when you combine that with the potential bowl game Heisman jinx for Sam Bradford and the motivation that Tim Tebow is carrying into this game, I think the Gators will get it done. It will be high scoring and I think it will be close. Other than the announcers, it should be a very enjoyable and entertaining game.

Florida 45 | Oklahoma 38

Who do you think will win it?

Kenshin Kawakami Opens the Door for the Twins

Email Post Email Post

112 WinsKenshin Kawakami to the Minnesota Twins?

1328 Strikeouts

Japan’s Central League MVP

That’s Kenshin Kawakami, the pitcher who’s drawn the interest of 7 big league ball clubs, including the Minnesota Twins.

Wait a second, the Twins?

One could certainly make the argument that a team can never have enough arms, but with Liriano, Baker, Slowey, Blackburn, Perkins, and the possibility of a Humber, Swarzak, or Duensing sighting, the Twins seem to be relatively full in the bullpen, especially when it’s been so obvious that they need the help at 3B.

Here’s what Kenshin Kawakami does for the Twins: He opens up the door to deal pitching. The Twins have the option of reopening negotiations to grab an Adrian Beltre or J.J. Hardy type player that otherwise would be too costly. With Kawakami, the Twins have another arm to ante up with the Brewers or Mariners. Using Kawakami as trade bait himself, or possibly being more willing to send a Scott Baker away in order to get a J.J. Hardy, the Twins would certainly have more trade options.

And if no deal was made, we start our season with a devastatingly deep rotation including Liriano, Baker, Slowey, Kawakami, and Blackburn, enough to excite any fan. The Twins could go with a very deep rotation or a much more potent offense, either way it would invigorate some life back into this club after a very slow offseason.

Let’s just hope this doesn’t turn into a bidding war.

LOTD: Video Emerges of Plaxico Burress Shooting Himself in the Leg

Email Post Email Post

Plaxico Burress Video | Video of Plaxico Burress Shooting Himself One of the biggest stories of the 2008 NFL season was New York Giants WR Plaxico Burress shooting himself in the leg with an unlicensed handgun. Adding insult to injury, the Giants suspended Plaxico Burress and then proceeded to claim the #1 seed in the NFC Playoffs without him.

Until now, we have had to get by with news reports about Plaxico Burress’ notorious itchy trigger finger. But that’s why we should all be thankful for the guys at Flash Sports Tonight. And to show our appreciation (since, as you can see below, they helped to promote us), FST has been chosen for the Thursday LOTD.

Season 2 of the Greatest Animated Sports Cartoon in the History of Mankind kicked off earlier this week with FST field reporter Vinny Tresselini uncovering video of Plaxico Burress shooting himself — along with the untold story of how the shooting happened. (Hint: it involved Tiki Barber)

Enjoy:

(And if for some reason the video isn’t displaying, head on over to Flash Sports Tonight and watch it there.)

According to Tresselini, the Giants have declined comment on his breaking story and the video of Plaxico Burress shooting himself. They did however release a one line statement:

We wish Plaxico a full and speedy recovery from his leg injury — in another city — and are only sad that he did not have better aim in Tiki’s direction.

So there you have it. No word from Vinny yet on whether or not he has uncovered video of the story that broke earlier today about the shooting that Pacman Jones apparently arranged while he was still with Tennessee. But, as we learned from Season One of FST, it’s probably only a matter of time.

Breaking: Browns Reach Agreement with Eric Mangini to be Head Coach

Email Post Email Post

Browns Reach Agreement with Eric ManginiBreaking news from the Cleveland Browns training facility in Berea, Ohio: Eric Mangini will be the Browns next head coach, replacing Romeo Cennel who was fired on Dec. 29 after a disappointing 4-12 season.

The official announcement will be made Thursday morning from Berea when Mangini will be introduced to the media, according to a report from WKNR AM 850.

The announcement comes on the heels of a rumor that Lerner was actually waiting until Monday to name his new head coach. That’s when former Denver Broncos Head Coach Mike Shanahan, would be available.

The Broncos were one game away from a play-off berth, and the firing of Shanahan was viewed a surprise to national sportscasters and most of the sports-covering press.

Mark “Munch” Bishop of WKNR reported after today’s announcement that Lerner had been advised to wait until Shanahan returned from a two-week family vacation — and to sit down and talk with Shanahan before committing to Mangini.

Apparently, Lerner, for whatever reason, decided to go with Mangini who actually started his career in Cleveland as an assistant under Bill Belichick.

Although the New York Jets at one point were 8-3 for the season, they ended their run at 9-7 and failed to make the play-offs.

Allegedly, Mangini did not like the acquisition of former Packer great Brett Favre to the Jets team last year. He managed to reign Favre in, but after about six games, Farve who was older than Coach Mangini ,took more control which some critics say, led to Favre’s typical gunslinger play — exciting and risky, and in the end the interceptions killed Farve’s chance to make the play-offs as a Jet, and Mangini took the fall for the disappointing season.

“Lerner simply fell in love with Eric Mangini during his first interview,” according to a news report from Daryl Ryder, WKNR beat reporter. “My only problem is, Randy Lerner was in such a hurry to get this done.”

Mangini is said to be recruiting assistant coaches from the Jets organization.

Mangini’s direct supervisor, the Browns general manager and perhaps team president, have not been chosen, although Lerner is said to be waiting for permission from the Baltimore Ravens to interview Kokinis, who worked under Browns great receiver and Ravens general manager, Ozzie Newsome, thought by many to be a recruiting genius.

Baltimore will play Tennessee on Saturday. If the Ravens lose the game, Lerner would be free to speak with Kokinis.

One can only hope Lerner was not in a hurry to get the Browns business out of the way to jet off to England to see his Astin-Villa futbol (soccer) team play. (Lerner bought the soccer team after the Browns were willed to him after the death of his father, Al Lerner, the original team owner of the 1999 Browns.

Phil Savage, the Browns fired general manager, also came from the Baltimore organization.

Tune in to Midwestsportsfans.com tomorrow to find out more details following the press conference.

LOTD: SportsBlogNet Seeks to Help Sports Bloggers Drive Traffic, Make Money

Email Post Email Post

We launched Midwest Sports Fans back in August of 2008, not really knowing what to expect or where this thing could go. All we knew was that we wanted to create a forum where sports fans from the Midwest could write about and discuss the sports issues that were of interest to them.

Certainly, things have taken off a lot faster and more prodigiously than we’d ever imagined.

Part of the reason for that is sports blog networks. Sites like BallHype and YardBarker have been integral to the growth of Midwest Sports Fans, and really do a great job of providing a sense of community for sports bloggers.

And I was fortunate enough to stumble upon another one of these sports blog networks recently, and have decided to highlight it with today’s LOTD.

The network is called SportsBlogNet, and MSF just recently became a member. SportsBlogNet has been around since August of 2007 and appears to be growing pretty quickly, as I’ve seen numerous blogs join the network just in the past few days. Here is what SportsBlogNet says about itself in its About page:

Sports Blog Net is currently built on the principal of making all blogs in the network as successful as possible. Both in terms of money and traffic. We want sports fans to Discover, Read, Write, and Build.

Our goals are to get all the small blogs out to the masses, give new bloggers the ability to get the exposure they are looking for, and give sports fans a destination that they want to visit everyday.

Poke around at the links listed above, and if you are a sports blogger who is looking to broaden your horizons, increase traffic, interact with other sports bloggers, and increase your revenue potential, I think you’ll find there is a lot to like about SportsBlogNet. Purdue Loses to Penn State, Falls to 0-2 in Big Ten, Below…Indiana?!?

Earlier today, FOMSF (Friend of Midwest Sports Fans) T-Mill over at Off the TracksPurdue loses to Penn State wrote the following in his Purdue-Penn State preview post:

Tonight’s Penn State game has the potential to be one of our greatest victories of the season.

Sorry T-Mill, and you Boilermaker fans out there, but the Boilermakers were unable to get it done on the road against an upstart Penn State team playing very good basketball right now.

And with the Boilermakers’ loss tonight, Indiana fans everywhere were provided with the perhaps the greatest bit of pleasure they will have during what is sure to be an ugly and difficult Big Ten season. This screen capture says it all:

Purdue loses to Penn State - below IU in Big Ten Standings

Yes, for perhaps the only time in this Season of Great Expectations for Purdue, and this Season of No Expectations for Indiana, the Hoosiers are above the Boilermakers. Look, am about as die-hard a Hoosier fan as you will find. (As an example, my girlfriend surprised me this Christmas with what she hyped as the “greatest Christmas present ever.” What was it? An autographed Washington Bullets Calbert Cheaney jersey. That’s right, I’m old school IU.) But not even if I am foolish enough to think that this year’s inexperienced and undermanned Indiana team can compete with Matt Painter’s solid Purdue bunch.

So I will enjoy standings that look like what you see above for as long as humanly possible. And get your licks in now Boilermaker fans — you may be better than the Hoosiers this year, but we’ll give you a battle in Bloomington and you know that Crean-Painter will be as competitive as Knight-Keady was within two years.

So what went wrong tonight for the Boilers in their loss to Penn State?

Well for starters, preseason Big Ten Player of the Year Robbie Hummel and Chris Kramer did not play. And then not scoring a field goal for the first five minutes of the game didn’t help either. Nor did the 13-0 run that Penn State went on in the second half. Amazingly, Penn State only shot .387 from the field and .565 from the free-throw line, as opposed to .458 and .846, respectively, for Purdue. Just looking Matt Painter and Purdue lose to Penn Stateat those numbers, you’d think Purdue won going away.

But those are the quirks of conference play. Purdue was also whistled for 9 more fouls that Penn State, leading to ten more opportunities from the line for the Nittany Lions. That helps to explain the final three point differential as well as anything.

At the end of the day, the Boilers were ranked #14 coming into this game and will now be knocked from their perch as Big Ten favorites. Starting out 0-2 sucks, sure — and the last time it happened to Purdue the finished 3-13 in the Big Ten — but the Boilers took advantage of the fact that they could sneak up on people last year. Now they are the ones being hunted. With Hummel and Kramer back in the lineup Purdue will resume being one of the best teams in the Big Ten and will no doubt finish in the top 3 or 4.

And when that happens — and IU is sitting at the the bottom of the standings with whatever paltry number of victories we have — I’ll always have the screenshot of the standings pictured above to remind me of the one moment during this season when the Hoosiers were over the Boilermakers.

Remembering Carl Pohlad: What Will His Ultimate Legacy Be?

Carl Pohlad, the longtime owner of the Minnesota Twins, died earlier this week at the age of 93. Born in 1915 into a poor Czech family, Pohlad likely may have lived out the fate of many underprivileged foreign Americans during the early part of the twentieth century.Carl Pohlad Bio - Minnesota Twins Owner Passes Away

Instead, Carl Pohlad passed away as one of the richest men in America.

As a child, Pohlad’s main influence was his mother who preached the values of hard work. While still in grade school, Pohlad heeded that advice and organized a group of his peers to pick cockleburs for a quarter an hour, taking a nickel from each as commission. This early business experience would prove to pay dearly for Pohlad down the road.

In the purest form of rags-to-riches success, Carl Pohlad invested his way to the top of financial stardom. Before earning a Purple Heart and a Bronze Medal while serving in World War II, Pohlad began the hobby of investing in businesses and eventually began running a few of his own, specifically in the banking industry. Over time he built up a fortune culminating with the billion dollar sale of Marquette Bank later in the century.

It was apparent Pohlad had his family in mind when he began his business endeavors. Starting a family network of banking, bottling, and real estate ventures, Pohlad kept a large portion of his business within his bloodline. Pohlad taught his family well ensuring that in time, he could hand over his businesses to them. After his passing, his sons assured Pohlad’s employees that they (Pohlad’s sons) would continue on with his work – just as dad wanted and prepared them to do. This education along with Pohlad’s dedication to hard work (as he worked until the day he died) has ensured endless wealth for generations of his family.

During that time he has been known for giving back to charity, including setting up funds that have raised more than a million dollars a year for his local community since the early nineties.

Commissioner Bud Selig stated, “I have never met a more loyal and caring human being. We will miss Carl and all of baseball joins me in sending our deepest condolences to the Pohlad family for the loss of our friend and partner.”

Carl Pohlad Bio - Legacy of Carl Pohlad, Minnesota Twins OwnerBy serving his country during World War II, giving millions upon millions to charity, working hard to ensure success for his family, and being a great person in the eyes of many he should be leaving quite a fond and lasting memory among us.

One minor detail.

He also owned the Minnesota Twins.

Since his purchase of the Twins in 1984, Carl saw through two World Series championships, four AL Central titles, and two AL West titles. He also built one of the most captivating franchises in American sports by uniquely utilizing talent built from within, playing small ball, and rarely looking towards free agency to fill vacancies in the team lineup. Utilizing one of the smallest payrolls in baseball, a sport where some players nearly make more than entire teams, the Twins found success by reaching the playoffs this decade on a fairly consistent basis.

So what’s not to like?

Running one of the lowest payrolled teams in the sport, while simultaneously being one of the richest men in the world certainly lingers in the minds of die-hard Twins fans across the nation. The “What could have beens” are hard to dismiss. What could have been if we had paid to hold onto Johan Santana last season? Torii Hunter? David Ortiz? What could have been if we had only made a move for Adrian Beltre last season? What could we be this season if we could only sign that tier one player who would fill out our team? So often a face of the franchise would end up leaving for bigger dollar amounts elsewhere when Carl Pohlad refused to pay them. When the face of the franchise is turned over so frequently, it becomes harder for the common fan to relate.Carl Pohlad Bio - What Will Legacy Be?

Notoriously being known as the “Ebenezer Scrooge” of baseball, fans certainly have a hard time sympathizing with an owner who won’t spend a mere fraction of their own wealth to make a solid run at a championship. When other teams double, triple, and quadruple the Twins’ payroll, it’s difficult for someone to understand why the richest man in baseball wouldn’t follow suit. Besides the payroll issues, the billion dollar man signed an agreement to move the team out of Minnesota unless the public would help finance a new stadium. A billionaire, asking for the Minnesota residents, many of whom who were retirees or blue collared workers barely supporting their own families, to front more cash to keep the Twins in the city, certainly will leave a bad taste in anyone’s mouth.

One way or another, he ran the Twins like a business.

—–
But what will the Twins fan remember?

In a society where “What have you done for me lately” has become increasingly relevant, the low payrolled teams, the threats to move the Twins out of the city, and having never signed that free agent to push the Twins over the hump will most likely be hard for the common fan to forget. An owner cannot run a professional sports team purely as a business, so long as the owner wants to leave a positive, lasting legacy with the fans.

In time, as with anything, the bad memories will fade and we will remember the championships, the titles, and the great teams. We will remember the savvy business man he was and the team-oriented style of play that was fostered during his tenure. We will remember his service to the country and his service to his family.

But for now, his ultimate legacy waits.

Playoff Pick ‘Em

Email Post Email Post

I realize that i am an idiot, and apologize to everyone involved with our Pick Em Contest for the following:

1) Not starting the contest until week 8.

2) Neglecting the contest entirely for the last several weeks.

3) Being so much better than everyone at picking outright winners.

I will play like a champion, and make no excuses for my actions.

Next year will be different, I assure you, insofar as we will play every week beginning week 1 and have an ACTUAL prize worth winning (we hope). I cannot, however, promise not to win said contest.

At any rate, because I am responsible for the unfortunate temporary cessation of the contest WHILST in first place, I find it necessary to forfeit any title or prize I may be deserved of at the end of this years Pick Em Contest. I also agree to forfeit any bragging rights on this site, even if i may earn them.

So here’s this weeks pick’ em for those who still want to play. And again, please forgive me for my unforgivable absence and neglect.

Breaking: Marvin Harrison Will Not Face Charges in Philadelphia Shooting

Marvin Harrison Will Not Face Charges in Philadelphia ShootingLooks like the Philadelphia DA could not get cooperation from enough credible sources to move forward.

According to MyFoxPhilly.com, Marvin Harrison will not face charges in connection to the Philadelphia-area shooting that occurred in April of 2008. District Attorney Lynne Abraham announced the decision at a press conference earlier today.

I did not get a chance to see the press conference (couldn’t find it on the MyFoxPhilly site, though they said it would be streaming) but the official write-up does not mention any specific reason for the dismissal charges. Either way, this is obviously great news for Marvin Harrison, who can breathe a little easier today.

I have to admit that I am somewhat surprised.

I half expected to see an outcome like we say today, in which Harrison would not face charges, because the prosecutors have had such a hard time a) getting a straight story from the victim and b) finding any other witnesses whose credibility would stand up court. But from my own personal opinion, and from what I’ve gathered through some digging, I think the likelihood that Marvin Harrison was not the shooter seems rather remote. Obviously my opinion doesn’t mean squat, and Colts fans will likely flame me for stating it and for asking what the difference is between Plaxico Burress and Marvin Harrison, but as I once heard Rasheed Wallace say during a post game interview: it is what it is, and it do what it do.

I would go into some of my own thoughts and feelings on this further, but in the interest of knowing that there is someone out there more credible and more adept at explaining them, I will refer you to ProFootballTalk.com, where Mike Florio has a great breakdown of today’s announcement by the Philly DA that no charges will be filed against Marvin Harrison — not even for the widely accepted fact that it was Harrison’s gun that was used in the shooting. That is perhaps the most surprising part of the announcement. I figured he might avoid the shooting charge, but did not think he would escape at least some liability for his gun being used in a shooting.

Keep in mind, the end of the criminal investigation does not influence the civil charges Harrison faces in connection with the shooting. And while his future certainly does not look like it will end up behind bars or with any hefty penalties or fines, the future of Marvin Harrison as an Indianapolis Colt is certainly a huge question mark as we move forward in 2009.

But that are all questions for the future. For today, at least, Marvin Harrison can relax with the knowledge that he will not face charges for the shooting back in April.
