Brady Quinn to Play – Derek Anderson to Sit | Cleveland Browns Tale of 2 Seasons
Charlie Frye goes down in flames. From rock bottom, Derek Anderson emergs as a Pro-Bowl quarterback. His passing yards flirt with 3800 while he stacks up 32 TDs. Braylon Edwards catches 80 receptions for nearly 1300 yards and 16 scores. The amazing Josh Cribbs goes for over 2200 return yards and 3 TDs. Sounds like a playoff team to me?
Almost is how close Derek Anderson got to leading the Browns to their first post-season appearance since 2002 — almost. Yet almost became ‘did not’ as the Browns ended their year with the same old result: no playoffs.
But hey, we’ll go get ‘em next year with our talented team! Right?
Despite a promising end to the ’07 season, the Browns emerged as a colossal fiasco with a 0-3 start to this season. They looked completely awful in those games. It seems as though this same group of talented stars which concocted that emergence in ’07 have ceased to exist. The Browns may have lit up the Giants in a Monday Night blow-out game in week 6, and constructed a respectable 3-2 stretch in the last 5 games, but no numbers can make up for a gigantic shift in Derek Anderson’s confidence level form last season to now.
Like a new kid on the block, DA’s self-assurance and poise are totally non-existent this year as compared to last year. His lack of confident radiation to his team this season has become evident with each clumsy pass and blown chance to close games. Let us not forget this may be the same Derek Anderson who might never have recovered from his clutch-game meltdown against the Bengals at the end of the ’07 season. His 3-and-outs have been so repetitive and brief that our defense hardly has a moment of rest before they’re back on the field
Of course, if my star WR Braylon Edwards was leading the league in dropped passes (13), I’d probably run the ball myself before I’d chuck it to #17 and pray for a completion.
(Editor’s note: We interrupt this post for a quick poll, brought to you by Brady Quinn Eye Black – it smears on its own so it looks like you’ve done something besides just hold a clipboard!)
(Now back to the post.)
Now that the Browns have met the half-way point of the season, they face the danger of their playoff hopes dwindling to nothing. Yet there is still hope for these battered Brownies in this “second seasonâ€. As the gates
of Believeland have been thrashed and breached, Cleveland’s last hope to hold the line of post-season expectation rests in the hands of our Chosen One, our Messiah, our Boy Wonder who befriends any breezy gust from the sideline fan into his seemingly angelic hair: Brady Quinn.
All of you faithful Quinn-junkies out there now have the opportunity to cheer your hearts out as the Golden Boy emerges from the gates with an opportunity to get the Browns’ rickety season back on track toward a post-season spot. Cleveland would in all probability need a 6-2 run in their new 8-game season to finish 9-7 and even have a prayer to make the wildcard spot.
Mind you, this second half comeback will include opponents such as Tennessee, Buffalo, Philadelphia, and Indianapolis. Oh, did I mention those first 3 teams are on the road? If you’re an avid and optimistic fan of the Dawg Pound, many more Sunday Nights with disappointing migraines and a bottle of Nyquil to help sleep off the discontent may be headed your way.
Yet, still, there is hope for the Browns. After all, who the hell saw the Dolphins being 4-4 thus far with their first 2 wins coming against New England and San Diego, two playoff teams of 2007? If you said ‘me’ you’re lying. As no one gave the Dolphins so much as a chance to be anything this season, their performance has fooled everyone.
Maybe that’s just what this Cleveland team needs: their old spot away from the lime light and
an initiative to play when no one expects much from them.
If Brady Quinn can pull off a miraculous display of leadership and performance, the Browns have the chance to catch a second breath to rescue their decaying season. The idea of a second season may seem ludicrous to many, but not to a diehard Browns fan who has seen only 2 winning seasons since their reincarnation.
It appears that the former QB dilemma in Cleveland has re-established itself. Let’s hope it’s for the final time, and that this Sultan of Studs is more than just an overrated high draft pick with a turdly EAS commercial.

We’ll see what Brady can do. The Browns’ problems this season go way deeper than Derek Anderson, who had actually been playing much better recently. Starting Quinn certainly provides a fresh feel to the 2nd half of the season, but how much of a difference can he really make?
You would think if Quinn was that much of a difference maker that he would have been starting already.
Sometimes you never know until a guy gets out there and starts playing. We’ll see Thursday. The Browns have to pull out a victory by any means necessary just to keep their tiny sliver of playoff hope alive.
