Ben Roethlisberger Injury Update

(Update, 11/7 11:35 am: According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Ben Roethlisberger has not practiced this week but will attempt to practice today — indicating that he should be ready to go this weekend against the Colts.)

The Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Washington Redskins last night on Monday Night Football, further twisting the knife into the backs of Browns fans who had it inserted the minute Braylon Edwards dropped the infamous bomb from Derek Anderson late in the Browns’ loss to the Ravens.

Surprisingly, the Steelers were able to win with Ben Roethlisberger on the bench for the second half. Roethlisberger was having shoulder problems again and was replaced by Byron Leftwich at halftime. Leftwich played well and led the Steelers to a key road victory that keeps them firmly atop the AFC North.

The early indications on the shoulder injury of Ben Roethlisberger are that he has a bruised AC joint, but that there is no ligament damage. As of right now, Roethlisberger is day-to-day and should be ready for Steelers next game this Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts.

We’ll keep you updated if anything further emerges regarding the status of Ben Roethlisberger and his perpetually tender shoulder.

Big Ben will be fine. Frankly, I wouldn’t mind seeing him sit a game and heal a little more, God knows most QBs wouldn’t have been tough enough to absorb this kind of punishment all year. But hey — that’s the kind of luxury you have when you’re 6-2 and sitting all pretty on top of the division. (Why, not even Rusty’s prediction the Steelers would be what, 4-5 by game 9 could prevent it — go figure!)

In the meantime, I’ll leave you chumps with a little gift courtesy of the #1 fan base in football:

“We actually went silent count one or two times out there,” Chris Samuels said. “I mean, Jason called it so we had to basically obey it.”

Wait, that was the home team? Using a silent count? Because of the noise from fans rallying behind their defense?

“Uh huh,” said Pete Kendall, who said that had happened to him elsewhere but admitted he was a tad surprised last night. “I mean, that’s not the reputation or the expectation I had of the fans here,” he said, “but who am I to begrudge somebody from making a profit by selling their tickets? I’m playing for money, and they’re watching, and it’s their right to do what they want with their tickets.”

How many Steelers fans were there last night? Unclear. A lot. Enough that, after walking from the parking lot to the press box, everyone was talking about it, hours before kickoff. Enough that when Antwaan Randle El ran out before the game, the boos were obvious. Enough that, in the final minutes, when Pittsburgh got an interception, a writer who couldn’t see the play guessed that something bad must have happened to Washington, judging by the roar of the crowd.

My original guess was 15 percent, but I was mocked for going too low. Was it 20 percent? Was it 25 percent? Some writers guessed as high as 30, and the Washington Times went with 33 percent, although I still say that’s way too high. Your guess on the percentage?

Rusty, Rusty… look I know you’re ticked that Steeler fans have been proven now as the top fan base you Clevelanders CLAIM to be, but this has to take the cake.

First, those articles SUGGEST not prove anything. Second, it was an ACCIDENT caused by someone — Redskin fan or Steeler fan — leaving on a tailgate grill during the game. Not the intentional “burn baby burn!” kind of thing you’re making it out to be.

Tsk tsk. You’ve hit a new low Rusty. And considering you’re from Cleveland, that’s saying something.

Of course, you would be the expert on big things burning, given the Cuyahoga River and all.

The energy that the entire team gets when Byron Leftwich comes into the game is on a different level. The offensive line actually plays better. I don’t think the line likes Ben. I can’t say that I blame them. He is very arrogant. My preference would be to see Byron instead of Ben. I hope that Coach Tomlin doesn’t live to regret Ben starting because he gets off to a less than stellar start. Ben has not been the same since his accident. I only wish that hadn’t happened to him. He was awesome before that. Our line hasn’t been the same since Grimm left. He was an awesome line coach and the Steelers should have done everything in their power to retain his services. I still think the Steelers can win, but my hope is that Ben is up to the task on Sunday.
