Call it a hunch. Call it a gut feeling. Heck, call it wishful thinking from a Cleveland Browns fan if you want to. But I think the Cleveland Browns are going to shock the NFL and beat the New York Giants tomorrow night on Monday Night Football.
In the preseason this would not seem like a shocker. The Browns were a trendy pick to win the AFC North and take a step forward after their 10-win season last year. After a woeful preseason (which included a huge ass-kicking at the hands of these same Giants) and a rough 1-3 start to the regular season, expectations have once again been lowered for the Browns
But it’s time to raise those expectations once again. Derek Anderson finally found a rhythm in the Browns’ win over Cincinnati. Braylon Edwards is far too talented and far too prideful to not begin playing like the top-5 NFL receiver that he is. And the Browns defense has proven to be opportunistic and better than expected. Plus, even though Kellen Winslow is most likely out of this game after spending three days in the hospital, Donte Stallworth is back (I hope I didn’t just jinx it!) to provide a legitimate receiving threat opposite Braylon Edwards. Josh Cribbs, special-teamer extraordinaire and momentum shift waiting to happen, is also back fully healthy and ready to spark the Browns with field position changing plays on kickoffs and punts.
Add it all up, plus add in the fact that the Browns are at home, the Giants are due for a loss and almost lost to Cincinnati, and the NFL is crazy and unpredictable, and you have a surprise Browns victory on Monday. The Giants will still be 5-1 and the defending Super Bowl Champs, and the Browns will just be turning their season around at 2-3, but at least for one cool Midwestern October night the Cleveland Browns will be the better team. Corey Williams upped the ante this week by calling the New York Giants out. I say he and the Browns walk the walk and send the Giants home a loser for the first time in 2008.

I like your style, Jerod. AND your graphic. It looks like Kamerion Wimbley is giving Eli Manning a prostate exam. Hopefully Eli gets a case of BIG BALLS tonight and has to sit out, soldier-style.

I like the optimism, but the Browns have a good a chance to beat the Giants as the Rams do of making the playoffs. Derrick Anderson has found a rhythm? My wife could find a rhythm against the Bengals… The Giants are too good at rushing the passer, have balance offensively, and are playing way too well right now for Cleveland to have a shot. I could be wrong, it is the NFL, but all things point to the Giants tonight.

Come on Joe! Can’t you appreciate a little irrational optimism from a frustrated Browns fan? Of course all signs point to the Giants, which is precisely why the Browns have a chance tonight. It’s the NFL…”any given Sunday”…where surprises aren’t really surprises because crazy and unexpected stuff happens every week.
Can it happen tonight? I sure as hell hope so.

If the 0-5 Bengals could take the Giants to overtime 2 weeks ago, there is probably something to this Cleveland over New York Giants prediction.

Good first half…17-14 Browns. Braylon Edwards showed up, the DBs are making plays, and Derek looks fairly confident and in rhythm. And the substitute soldiers (Heiden and Dinkins) are picking up the Winslow slack.
Keep it up Browns!!!!

Well, I’m without cable, and apparently just missed a huge upset. I been itchin like a crackhead all day without my ESPN and now I miss Cleveland’s upset of the Super Bowl champs. Who’da thunk it. So much for conventional wisdom…

What a great game! There is no conventional wisdom in the NFL. Never has a phrase been more apt than “Any Given Sunday.”
Perhaps people were writing the Cleveland Browns off a little too quickly. With so parity in the AFC, 2-3 is not a horrible spot to be sitting in.
