Roy Williams Traded | Detroit Lions Trade Roy Williams to Dallas Cowboys

Just saw an article on ESPN that Ed Werder is reporting that the Detroit Lions have traded wide receiver Roy Williams to the Dallas Cowboys. This was confirmed in an article on the Cowboys website, DallasCowboys.com. The article reports that the Cowboys will receive Roy Williams along with Detroit’s seventh round draft pick. In return, the Detroit Lions will receive the Cowboys first round pick, along with a third round and sixth round pick. The Cowboys are also reportedly trying to negotiate a long-term deal with Roy Williams, a University of Texas alum.
Here are my initial thoughts about the trade:
1 — Good move for the Cowboys. With Terrell Owens getting older and being less effective recently (either because of the offense, or declining skills, or more acute coverage by cornerbacks, or a combination of all of the above) the Cowboys were going to target a wide receiver in next year’s draft. But this is a team that is built to win now, and whether they win a Super Bowl this year or not, they will be a contender again next year most likely.
The history of rookie wide receivers producing consistently in their first season is shoddy at best. Roy Williams has already proven to be a solid NFL wide receiver. I don’t believe he is a superstar, and his numbers back this assertion up; but he has also been toiling in the NFL graveyard that is Detroit. Perhaps with a decent team and a good QB, Roy Williams can become the superstar that many people predicted he would be coming out of the University of Texas.
2 — Being a Browns fan and a Dolphins fan has not be all that joyful over the past decade. However, it’s nothing compared to the utter hopelessness that Detroit Lions fans must feel. I realize it is probably in their long-term interests to trade Roy Williams before he walks at the end of the season. Still, when your team is pretty much the laughingstock of the league, and your quarterback is dropping back into the endzone and stepping out for a safety without being touched by a defender, and the highlight of your decade is Matt Millen being fired, it can’t provide very much joy or excitement to see one of the few good players on your team (and sound draft choices in a decade of poor ones) be traded for some draft picks. In the long run it may work out. But right now, it’s just one more kick to the junk with a steel-toed boot for fans of the Detroit Lions.
3 — The Cowboys now have two players named Roy Williams. The overrated defensive back and the overrated (based on his numbers at least) wide receiver. Regardless of what happens this season, everyone expects Wade Phillips to be gone at the end of year, to be replaced by purported offensive genius Jason Garrett. But what if the Cowboys offense continues to struggle? Might they look elsewhere for a coach? Is it possible that media whore and soap opera conductor Jerry Jones would choose to make it a trio of overrated Roy Williamses and bring in the North Carolina basketball coach to coach his team? (I mean, look at that picture! He looks like a defensive back trying to psych himself to attempt to tackle Marion Barber.)
Think about the ego that it would take for an owner to believe he could turn a college basketball coach into an NFL coach. Then think about the money it would take to lure the basketball Roy Williams away from his alma mater to coach a new sport. Now think about Jerry Jones. If ego and money aren’t the first two words that came to your mind, I have a drunk Pacman Jones waiting in the bathroom to berate you for lying.
This is the NFL and this is Jerry Jones we’re talking about here. I realize it sounds completely preposterous, but so did the thought of St. Louis beating Washington or someone being dumb enough to give Pacman Jones another chance. In the NFL (No F-ing Logic) and in the world of Jerry Jones, anything is possible.

Personally i think this trade makes no sense
miles austin was coming into his own, patrick crayton catches balls, you have the best TE in the league….why bring in the ego to battle with TO? unless the two start making love behind the scenes they are bound to make brad johnson want to retire with the bitchy attitudes…which brings up more points, why when Romo goes down do you bring in another wide reciever, who knows what the second stringer will do? and with pacman gone (jones had to know roger would send him out) why wouldnt you look to the other side of the ball….thats clearly where the problems are. tell you what, this team is no where near the super bowl….my prediction- they don’t even make the playoffs its washington and new york. unless brad johnson steps up as a major leader for this ballclub and connects with every reciever he has, all the time…dallas falls flat on their face with drama.

I think it’s a great move for the Cowboys, which tops off a miserable week. True, the injuries are really hurting the team, with Romo gone for a month and Felix Jones out for 2 weeks. The loss of the punter, McBriar, is also big as he was making some crucial punts. That being said, the addition of Williams is huge as it completely opens up the Cowboys offense. Yes the next 2 weeks are going to be tough, and the Giants game is extremely intimidating, but Brad Johnson, as old as he is, has a ring and knows how to keep the ball safe. Hopefully this weekends debacle is a major wake up call for the entire team and the offensive line returns to form. Once Roy Williams learns the offense and Felix comes back, there will be a potent machine ready for the return of Romo. The defense does need to step it up however, especially the front 7 to help out the secondary. The corners should be decent if we can get a good pass rush, but look for a couple of big plays given up. But T.O. and Roy Williams will get along fine. Roy said today that he is looking to learn from TO like TO did with Jerry Rice. Both men know that TO is the now and Roy the future. No big ego problems.

Maybe Roy is being brought in to play defensive back, because that is what they really need.
